MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel pump question

Can anyone tell me if a Holley fuel pump would be suitable as a back up pump on my TF 1500, the only numbers on it are 6145-2 and 1743 and
34 7446b on the inlet flange.

Thanks

Better to just order a cheap $39.00 one and tuck it back under the tank....
The Holley on my 'little car' is incredibly noisy.....you can hear it here.....

I can't speak to that specific pump, but most aftermarket fuel pumps are designed to work with American iron, where the fuel supply is greater that for an SU. I have seen out-of-the-box American pumps have 5-8 pounds pressure, which will completely overwhelm SU carbs, to very bad driving effect. A fuel regulator must be used to reduce the pressure down to a couple of pounds, and I know the Facet electric pump is popular. But why? You end up with a lot of un-necessary hardware, looking clumsy and fitting poorly - I often see them hanging only by the fuel lines at the tank, putting too much strain on the lines themselves.

I'm not sure why SU pumps seem to be judged so unreliable. They are simple to clean, reliable and original. Usually a quick clean of the points will get it back to functioning, and when converted to electronics, are dead reliable - ask Dave DuBois, who does the work. His fuel pumps have never missed a beat in my cars.

...even a non electronic SU is fine... i keep a little patch of emery cloth and a paper match book for cleaning in my tool box and usually have to use them once every year and a half or so... takes two minutes and i'm off again.....

Gentlemen - ".even a non electronic SU is fine... i keep a little patch of emery cloth and a paper match book for cleaning in my tool box and usually have to use them once every year and a half or so... takes two minutes and i'm off again....."

This is all well and good - BUT - George is talking about a TF 1500, where the pump is mounted under the car, which makes the cleaning of the points at the side of the road a cumbersome and rather difficult proposition, not to mention it being downright dangerous if one is doing it at the side of the road - see the article, Backup Fuel Pump (The Story) in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my Homepage at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ .

George - Unless the Holly pump you are quoting is actually a Facet pump being sold under license and the output pressure is 4psi or less, you need to search around for a pump matching the above specification. There are several models of the Facet pumps that fit the bill, they are as follows: 40104, 40163, 40171, 40178, 40217, 40241, 40254. You can also use the AIRTEX model E8016S. If using the Facet pump, also get the sound mounts available from Moss Motors that fit the exhaust mounting for the MG midget. The sound mounts will eliminate the clattering sound of the Facet pump from being transmitted into the interior of the car. Since there is no way to stop the fuel from escaping the fuel tank when the fuel line is disconnected from the fuel pump on your TF, I would suggest that while you are fussing with installing the backup pump, you also install a shut off valve in the fuel line, close to the tank - See the article, Backup Fuel Pump in the above quoted Homepage. Finally, you could also install your backup pump in the engine compartment rather than under the car. Cheers - Dave

Thank you all for your valuable advice, it just so happens I have a new Holley pump been in the shed for years, will now put it away for another. application or just sell it of and get myself the correct pump.
