MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel pump location

I am looking for some good pictures of the SU fuel pump installation in the late TF - the one with the fuel pump installed on the right frame rail at the back of the car. I am trying to make up a pictorial essay of the original fuel pump location on various MG models. Pleas e-mail the pictures to me at the above address. Thank you - Dave

Sorry Dave, despite warming outside tempeartures, my TF is still in hibernation for another 10 days, so hopefully, someone else will fulfill your needs.

However you raise an interesting point.

I never had any problems with a boiling fuel pump on any of my TDs, and 100°f ambient air temps never seemed to cause any problems. I believe the reason the factory moved it to the rear axle location, was to avoid a boiling fuel pump.

And I can't recall any recent complaints from TD owners about boiling fuel pumps. What do the racers do?

For reasons of easier service, I want to change to a (LP) solid state fuel pump and relocate it to the engine compartment of my TF, and would love to hear any pro/con arguments.

Gordon - See my article SU Fuel Pumps Fact and Myths at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/Fuel_Pumps/SU_Fuel_Pumps_Facts_and_Myths.pdf
In the section "Pusher" vs "Puller" fuel pumps there are comments from Fletcher Millmore related to why a rear mounted pump is a better choice. Vapor lock due to boiling fuel seems to be more apt to occur in the pasage between the float chamber and the jet of the carburetor than in the fuel pump. But the fuel in the inlet line to the pump is under vacuum and is more prone to vaporize in high ambient temperatures than fuel that is under pressure from a pump mounted at the back of the car. That said, I have never experienced a problem in that area in nearly 40 years of driving a TD. Cheers - Dave

Gordon-Dave.
Here in Florida after 40 yeaars of MG driving I have never had a fuel pump problem atributed to overheating. However I did have problems with my VA tourer in that it would clog up the pump screens and slow me down to 10-15 MPH.) thats 16-24 KPH for our northern friends)/

Sandy - If the filer screen is clogging up, you have a problem in the fuel tank that should be corrected. Every time the filter clogs it is causing the fuel pump to overheat. If it gets bad enough, you could wind up with a burned up coil. Cheers - Dave

David.
Thanks for the comeback. That happened on a trip to Sebring and was solved on return home.. I pulled over a cup of crud from the tank prior to resealing it. All was well afterward. After 18 years ownership I sold it back to within 20 miles from its old home in Capel Curig Wales.

Is that what they mean by "what goes around, comes around"? Cheers - Dave

Dave --- I've got pictures for you but can't get my scanner to put them in an email. So I'll snail mail them.
Something has gone wrong with the scanner software. I tried reloading but that didn't help. It used to send pictures to Outlook Express (which I hate) now it won't even do that.
