MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Filters

My 1954 TF has two fuel pumps. The SU pump is on the firewall and I have a backup Facet pump mounted at the right rear wheel well. I also have a clear filter with a replaceable cartridge mounted just prior to the Facet pump. This location makes it difficult to check the filter. I am thinking of moving the filter to the firewall just prior to the SU pump. The advantage is that the filter would be easy to see and also to change the cartridge and the disadvantage is that the Facet pump would have no filter.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Should I move the filter or leave it where it is?

In the archives, people MUCH smarter than me stated to not place a filter up stream of a fuel pump on an MG TF/TD.

People much smarter than me placed in the fuel tank, upstream of the pump, albeit it is not a very fine filter, but anything that gets through it will not affect an SU pump, which has the second filter in the system.

Tom and Peter-- Thank you for your thoughts on this topic. Am I correct in that you are saying that we should rely on the filter in the tank and the filter on the SU pump and there is no need for another filter?
All of this started last year when my engine died (naturally on a busy street). It was a long story but the problem turned out to be the filter for the backup Facet filter. This filter is not a see-through filter but instead has a solid casing and mounts to the pump. It was on the car for many years but for some reason became clogged and thus stopped the fuel flow. I removed this filter and installed the aforementioned clear filter just ahead of the tank. Am I going overboard with the filter(s), i.e. do I not need this extra filter? The original TFs had no other filter, as far as I know, other than the tank the SU pump.

Of course the originals did not have rust in the tank so no problem.

I (badly) ran a clear filter before the backup pump for 2 years, no rust got in the filter. I recently drained the tank through a clear fine filter and got nothing in the filter, so yes, I do have a filter before the pumps, yes I check it often.

When I checked the tank filter about 5 years ago there was no rust in the filter.

My understanding is that the 4 filters, tank, pump, carb inlets are adequate, particularly if you check the pump filter, which in your case is easy.

I did add a drain valve to allow easy draining of the tank, it is now available from Tom Lange at www.mgtrepair.net.

If the clear filter before the FACET is not catching anything you should be OK, but check it often just to be sure.

Peter--- I think you make perfect sense. When I had my issue with the Facet pump filter I drained quite a bit of fuel into a jar and fortunately found nothing. I thought I would be quite clever in mounting the clear filter between the tank and the Facet backup pump. My thinking was that at the start of the good weather driving season I pull each wheel for cleaning (I also have white-wall tires) and I would check the filter at that time. It seemed like a good idea at the time but I found it was not so easy to just look at the filter and see if there were any junk items there that should not have been there. I guess my best solution is to keep things as they and not just visually look at the clear filter but open it up as well for a better check. When I rebuilt the car I added a shut-off valve in the fuel line just after the tank so I shouldn't lose too much petrol, if any, when I open the filter.

Like you I added a shutoff between the tank and the backup pump, makes pulling the filter easy.

I recently made a new filter for in the tank. Like the old one, the new has a very fine mesh. Openings are about 0,2mm. The old one was very clean but had lost its stiffness and was bended. It was fun to figure out how that filter (probably) was made 70 years ago and I tried to copy that way.
