MG TD TF 1500 - Ford Type 9 5 speed gearbox

When I fitted a Type 9 gear box to the TF I bolted a bar, about 3" long to the Ford gear lever stub and a new lever at the other end of the bar. This was to position the lever more or less as the original one. Whilst this worked OK I always thought the gear lever stub was being rotated slightly when being moved from left to right and spoiling the Type 9s precision.

I have just fitted a Type 9 box into my, Sprite and physically moved the lever by cutting out a section of the gear box housing and rewelding the bits back together. The job was surprisingly easy and the shift is excellent. If anyone is thinking of doing the same contact me and I can explain how I did it.

Are you saying that you further modify the offset lever arrangement beyond what HiGear supplies in their kits?

I put one in my TF directly from High Gear right out of the box and it fits and works beautifully! Using High Gears rear mount, the engine didn't have to be moved forward. Love it! PJ

I had forgotten how I modified the TF. The image that Pat provides shows the lever being moved to the rear. On a midget/Sprite/Minor the lever needs to be moved to the front by about 4". On my modified TF reverse was difficult to engage. On the type 9 the lever must be pushed down, then to the left and forwards. I always felt that the extended lever, when pushed down, caused the lever stub on the box to tilt. Similarly when moved across the gate the stub would rotate slightly. This would be more exaggerated on my Sprite which would have needed a longer strap joining the stub on the box to the new lever.
