MG TD TF 1500 - Fender Wiring Harness Cover

Anyone know where the original outer sleeve for covering the wires under the fenders can be had? Appears to be a type of plastic loose fitting. You know what I mean. I've been everywhere trying to find this stuff with no luck. Seems our big suppliers don't list it. Cant even find anything to replace it at a large electrical supply co. PJ

Black heat shrink tubing looks very close to the original. I used it on the brown wires from the starter switch, looks pretty original. George

Paul,
This may not replicate the original outer sleeve very well, but I used a nylon braid that (IMHO) does look, at least, "somewhat period".

This has been on my car for over 15 years and still looks good.
Here is a link to supplier I use: (Digikey)

I also used it on my fog/driving lamps, hunting lamp, and reversing lamp. The gray wire on those was very brittle (from age) and I just liked the look of the black better than the gray.
Not correct...but then a lot of my car is "not correct"!

I got mine at a electronics (not electronic) shop that specializes in cabinet and computer equipment. It came in a bundle of all sorts of sizes. The length may be a problem as I think the longest was 24". I can't remember the name of the product :-)

The really odd thing about this place is that it used to be the site of the Sacramento MGTD/TF dealership in the early 50's.

The product Dave S. and Chris are talking about first came out under the name of Expando-Flex. It comes in a variety of sizes and provides great protection of the wires, but it will not keep water out of the wire run (neither will it trap water in the runs due to its open mesh. When I replaced the wiring in our TD, I got the cheapest harness (loom) I could get due to budget constraints and I was not impressed with the covering of the harness. I got several sizes of the Expando-Flex, removed all existing covering on the harness and replaced it with the Expando-Flex. That was done in the early 70s and is still on the harness and has served very well over the years. This is a product that I can highly recommend (although it cam sometimes be a challenge to install and needs to be done with the harness out of the car. Cheers - Dave

I just ordered a 25 foot roll of the black braided cover. I used it on the 72 B and it looks nice and is easy to use. I found the PVC type, but it's too thick and would have to be heated to bend without kinking. So it'll get the braid. I already tried the heat shrink and a lot is lost cutting to the proper length as it only came in 5 foot lengths. Thanks for all the tips! Very much appreciated. PJ

Maybe too late ...note they now offer the braid with a "tracer". I would bet very few "experts" would even notice it is nylon and not cloth!

David, If it's the same as I used on the B, then the weave is very tight and hardly noticeable as a braid. Done deal now, so that's what it's getting! Grin. PJ
