MG TD TF 1500 - Cross-eyed toofer...

Spent a spare 5 mins with a screwdriver trying to align the headlights... then noticed that *both* were the same and labelled "LH TRAFFIC" on the lens.

Should I have 1x RH & 1x LH instead?

These are Lucas sealedbeam bulbs, so I'd think they aren't the original fitment in any event.
Will

Will,

Both headlamps should be the same The RH or LH refers to the side of the road the car will be used on.

Your sealed beam uits are not original but will work fine - they are a later fitment but standard Lucas issue (even though there are many copies around)

The original lamps were called pre focussed and had separate bulbs. Water gets into them though and spoils the reflectors. You can still buy them though.

I think the light output from both is about the same but if you want to up grade reflectors to take separate halogen bulbs are available (in the UK made by Wipac) but they can cause problems with overloading the wiring and switch.

By the way perhaps someone can confirm if the lamps dont have either RH or LH they are for the US - don't they drive down the centre of the road !

Jan,
"don't they drive down the centre of the road" ...this is only on 2 lane back roads...SUV's & Lincolns get both lanes if operator is on the phone, others should use ditch or just "park" somewhere untill they pass.
On didvided highway's... under 40MPH get's the "left" lane....over 75 to 95MPH get's the "right" lane. SUV's & Lincolns in excess of 100MPH and talking on phone or reading a book get both lanes and are "excempt" from lane change signals. Those talking on phone, reading a book and eating a Big-Mac in excess of 100MPH get all lanes in both directions (same rules for "lane change" as above apply). Any vechicle equiped with a "fraied bundge cord bumper support system" and pick-up trucks with more than 12 empty beer bottles in the bed are to use all lanes, berm & median in a "zig-zag" pattern if operated between the speeds of 20MPH to 135MPH regardless of roadway and always have right of way. I have never seen this in print anywhere, but can assure you this is the system in place that is used on Ohio roadways. MG lighting standards would be best attained from local bicycle shop as we have about the same rights...we are just not required to wear a crash helmet! ;-0!!!

Will: I have an orignal set of Lucas headlamps on my car in new condition. They are RH so when I dip my lights they shine into the oncoming cars rather than to the curb or straight ahead. I got them from Australia a number of years ago (NOS).

If you can find me a set of new original LHD ones I'll swap you :-)

Will you might want to look at the original details section of the TF web page. I wrote a blurb on the correct lights and how to indenify.

For originallity, a TD or TF sold new in California would have to have sealed beam units, as the reflectorized lamps could not be legally sold as O.E.M.(a term the didn't exist then)equipment on a new car at the time.

Dave,
Ditto for New Jersey drivers!! Very eloquently put!

Dave and Robert,

Thought I would have got more stick from you guys over in the collonies. Also expected support from OZ but most Aussies are now in London working the bars. (If that dosen't get a response don't know what will.)

Tell me what's a SUV - the only SUs I kwow are carburettors and fuel pumps.

JAN; It is readily apparent to us Canadians that S.U.V. stands for SU's VICTORY over us mere mortals.

Jan,
Here in the states SUV stands for "Sports Utility Vehicle", which is to say, a 4 wheel drive vehicle, approximatly the size & weight of the Amberly (?) Tank manufactured by Abingdon in WWII. Drivers of said vehicles are, to put it mildly, difficult! All the more so in a B or T Series MG, where they are just as likely to run you over (not sure if they would even notice!) as stop for you!
Robert Dougherty

Robert,
NJ SUV's have "manually operated" brakes? Here "stopping" is actuated automatically by pulling into the nearest parking spot marked by the little blue signs with a picture of the little guy with the wheel on his butt! I think these are "timmed" rest areas as the operators seem to "spring" from the transport and "run" into the store. On returning to the transport devise the operator can then "score" extra points if they can rundown an elderley person with a walker or a mono-ped on crutches (parked 1/4 mile from door). These "points" are then redeemable for more "rest tyme" ....kind of like frequent flier miles....pretty sure that's the way it works.
