MG TD TF 1500 - Carpet cutout at seat mount - TF

> UNDER-SEAT CARPET
Is the under-seat carpet cut out around the front of the hinge on the seat track? Or does the hinge sit on top of the under-seat carpet?

> FRONT CARPET
Is cut out for the seat hinge on the front carpet piece only behind the hinge pin? If so, the carpet will cover the bolt in the hinge, but allow the seat track to pivot up. Seems like the bolt will cause a big hump in the carpet.

I will install a Lift the Dot slightly behind the hinge on the door sill side and on the gearbox side.

Lonnie, Here's a photo of Matthews old carpet in the area you are speaking of. Might be of help. PJ

Here is my factory carpet.
-Hinge sits on top.
-Bolts are covered.
-LTD's outboard of seat bolts.

Matthew.

Edit:
LOL: Paul beat me by a minute!!

M Magilton

Sorry Matthew, didn't mean to step on your post, but I saved your photo for my carpet layout and it looks like we had the same thoughts for Lonnie at the same time. PJ

Another shot showing the two pieces in their correct relative positions.

Absolutely no apologies required Paul.

Matthew.

Paul and Matthew -

You guys are amazing!! 45 minutes after I asked my question... you gave me what I needed. I'll be able to finish my carpets in time for the All British Car Show in Winter Park tomorrow. Nothing like a deadline to make you finish a project.

I had seen Matthew's photos (I also saved them for my carpet project.) I guess that I needed confirmation of what I was looking at.

Thanks,

To finish the carpet installation we will need to secure both the driver and passenger carpet to the floorboards with Lift-the-Dot studs and snaps. Two on each carpet just adjacent and behind the seat runner hinges. The rear edge of the carpets will be cut out around the seat runners.

Cut the carpet around your seat runners just behind the hinges and extending back along the runner. You should be able to lift the seat runners up to install the seats without fowling the carpet when installed correctly.

Note: Most mgtf's had their carpets extend only about 1" behind the hinges while MGTD's could up to 2" or more of carpet behind the hinge.

Thanks Chris -

I did exactly as you show on your website. Finished installing the last L-T-D today at four o'clock before the British Car pre-show party at 5:00.

My only change was to use hidden snaps at the back of the under-seat-carpet so that I can remove it.

I appreciate the time and detail that you put into your instructions. The Moss carpets were cut near perfect so I didn't run into any surprises.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

My trimmer has fitted wooden slats about 1" wide by 3/8" thick, to the floor under the seat rails. The hinge at the front bolts though these. The rear carpet has slots cut out to fit around these and small slits to the rear. OK it's not original but I can easily remove the carpets for cleaning and especially drying out. The latter is most important since I live in Scotland

Lonnie: I kind of like those hidden snaps too. As you noticed I used them on the passenger front carpet instead of putting the footrest on top so I could remove it too. It barely shows.

Don't you have to take out your seat runners in order to remove the underseat carpets?
Christopher Couper

Yes - I'll need to remove the seats, but only two bolts per seat.

I used snaps on the carpet in front of the footrest as you suggested.

I tacked the carpet on the gearbox cover to the floorboards. Looks good and tight, but I need to adjust the anti-rattle screw - so I'll have to decide whether to live with the noisy shifter or to pull up my gearbox carpet.
