MG TD TF 1500 - Carb Adjustment Woes

So, in our last outing a few months ago with six other TDs, when we stopped for a break, they all told me to move to the rear of the line because my exhaust was too rich and they were all suffocating.

When I weakened the mixture by turning the adjustment nuts clockwise, I found they were both only 3 flats open to begin with. I then closed them both all the way and the car was still running!! Both idle adjust screws are backed off also. Last time I checked the butterflies were properly seating.

Any idea what the problem(s) could be???

Thanks, Ray

Ray; It sounds like that your float level is way off or the float valves are leaking. This can be caused by a non original fuel pump supplying too much pressure.
conrad sanders

Hi Ray, check the needles. They should be standard ES.
There is sometimes a mix up with TD2 and TD mark 2 and the mark 2 needles are fitted which does not work.

Cheers,

Ray, Did you loosen the split pin on the choke tie rod before you adjusted the jets, and then readjust the rod afterwards? (I've been caught out on this one myself!!!). Unless you do, you will never get the mixture correct on both carbs..... AB

If original air cleaner, drive with air cleaner top off to see if any difference and/or check to make sure the top isn't crushed/support legs bent which cause richness under load. Also check for sticky/stuck carb piston.
