MG TD TF 1500 - Brake Master Cylinder

This weekend I was about to rebuild my master cylinder. I had ordered a rebuild kit from
Abingdon Spares. The cup seals supplied in the kit were too small from my cylinder. The bore of my cylinder is 1 inch. Couldnt find the bore in any of my manuals. Called Abingdon and they said the kit they sold me was the one they have been selling for years. Do I have an odd sized cylinder? What is the bore of a TD master cylinder?

Hi, Karl.

I think the bore is recorded in the shop manual, but mine is at home. I'll try to look it up when I get home, but e-mail me if I forget. Apple Hydraulics ( http://www.applehydraulics.com ) charges $60 for resleeving a MC, so that is an option if yours is bored too big. I saw someone selling a NOS M/C for $150 last week on E-bay, but at that price I'd rather buy new and not get something that has been rotting on a shelf for 20+ years.

It was nice meeting you and your wife last month at the ABCD, I'm sorry that I was too busy to talk much.

Karl,
I am fairly certain that the TD&TD MC bore is 7/8" dia. There are master cylinders which look almost identical to the TD one except that the bore is larger. My TD came from the US and that too was fitted with the incorrect MC also with a 1" dia bore. I was told that it was from a Morris Minor but have not been able to confirm this.

Just measured a rusty MC- definitely 7/8". Also, it says "Lockheed 7/8" on the body.

Thanks for the responses. It seems I have a non-standard bore master cylinder. The casting has "Lockheed 0 42" on it. Not sure why someone would use a larger bore since it increases pedal effort which based on other postings is high with the standard size cylinder. Checked a Morris Minor club page, they have an article on rebuilding the master cylinder. They list the size 7/8 in. I wonder what car used a 1 inch cylinder? Now I have to find an original. Thanks again for the help.

i seem to recall that there is another MC out there that is interchangeable with TDs. I think it is from a Jeep CJ8, of all things. The bore may be larger. they were fitted as a less expensive alternative to the original type for awhile. The archives may have something on this.
