MG TD TF 1500 - Brake cylinder lubricant notes

Im in the final stages of the worlds slowest TD brake rebuilding job. Because my system was previously charged with silicone brake fluid, which worked well for many years, and because I am replacing all soft components in the system with new parts, I will be recharging the system with silicone brake fluid.

The rear brake cylinders are new Moss reproduction units (Classic Gold, Authentic Reproduction, Moss part number 180-075). These brake cylinders come assembled with the internal piston cup, cup filler, and spring. The internal moving parts are lubricated with a red assembly grease. I called Moss technical support and was told the red assembly grease is equally compatible with glycol or silicone brake fluid.

I had the front brake cylinders and the master cylinder resleeved in stainless steel. I had some difficulty tracking down silicone compatible assembly grease for reassembling these cylinders. In the archives there is a brief note that dielectric connector grease can be used for this purpose. I purchased VersaChem (www.itwconsumer.com) Dielectric Connector Grease, part no. 15339. The VersaChem website describes another product, 100% Silicone Brake Grease, part no. 26199, which seems like the exact right product to use as a brake assembly grease. I contacted VersaChem and was told that the two products are identical and are only packaged differently. The silicone brake grease, however, is not often found in stores.

larry, can't you use the silicone brake fluid itself? regards, tom

Tom,

Brake fluid will certainly work. Assembly grease is recommended as something that will not migrate and continue to provide lubrication for an extended period of time. I can't speak from experience whether it delivers improved performance over simply using brake fluid.

When I installed all new lines and rebuilt cylinders, I switched to silicon... just used that for assembly... 'Still stopping after all these years!'

larry, i did not convert my car to silicon as early as gordon did, but my experience is the same. no leaks after 3 years. i should have included that in my original post. regards, tom

Larry,

I installed a Moss rear cylinder (with their assembly lube) and silicon fluid. The brake system has been together with no leaks for 5-6 years. I did have a couple of banjo leaks, but not from the assembly lube.

Good luck,
