MG TD TF 1500 - Birch grey colour match

I am trying to find a modern 2 pot epoxy colour match for my TF 1500. The original colour was Birch Grey and I have not been able to find a manufacturer today who has this match. Can anyone give me a manufacturer, a colour (preferably with paint batch number) for this old colour.Thanks.

Bill,

In June of 1996, Hal Kramer produced an excellent 16-page article on T-Series paint, including swatches of each colour. I believe reprints are still available.

Unfortunately the reproduction of these paints, didn't adapt well to the coated paper of the TSO, but he does list the original paint spec as PPG 31918, and its recent replacement number ARGGR3.

Hope this helps.

How does "Birch Grey" compare to "Dove Grey" from the MGB (think it was one year...'69?)

Bill,
In his book about the MG T-series, Clausager mentions the following numbers:
Birch grey GR3 = ICI 2507 or Ditzler 31918 or Rinshed-Mason BM002.
He also states that 12% of TF production was in grey (or 1207 cars !)
Hope this may be of help.
Cheers,
Nick, 52TD/63midget.

My TF was birch grey originally. It was resprayed black in the mid eighties, although there is a small area of original paint visible on the tub side of the firewall - and it looks like battleship grey.

Thanks guys for your help. Today I was able to get PPG to mix me up a trial pot of GR3 and I have applied some to the inside if one of the rear guards to see how it looks. I have to say that I am not overly happy with Birch Grey as a colour as I would describe it as a muddy drab grey. I can see why it was not a popular colour, and many cars originally produced in this colour have subsequently been repainted BRG or Red predominantly. I am now torn with the decision to "go original" ( Grey with red trim) or to choose another colour that is more appealing. Hmmmmm.....

Hi Bill,

I have sent an e-mail to you, with my comments concerning "Birch Grey"...

My 1500 still has its factory Birch Grey finish. There is a photo on the TF Originality site. Bill, if you want to post me a colour sample I will compare it to my car and give you my opinion. Dove grey was paler whereas birch had a little green in it.

Cheers, Matthew.

Bill, You might want to look at the following:

http://autocolorlibrary.com

Select European Cars and choose Austin/MG

Put in the year 1955 an on page 2 you will have the Birch Grey chip.
