MG TD TF 1500 - Bent TD Wheel

Just found a wheel for a TD that runs out more than it should. I have equipment for getting it to run true and an idea how to fix it but wonder if anyone knows of a proven method other than sending it to a wheel repairer. The width of the inside of the rim is uniform
so it is the central part that is out of shape although not noticeable.
Thanks,
George

George,
Let me know how your idea works...

I'm not sure how it happens, but i have worked on dozens of rims and have found so many with spokes 'sheared' off at the rim or the hub... for stainless rod buried in cast aluminum, its just weird how they break. Be careful when bending at the hub....!!!! http://gblandco.com/

George,

You are talking about the wheels that tires go on, correct?

If so, I have a question for you (and any others that may have some input). I've been selling some parts on eBay for an old friend of mine...included in these are three wheels. He said he used to use them for his snow tires (yep, his car was his daily driver for years in W. Va) and I wonder if it's worth trying to sell them or should we just toss 'em. They are round(ish) but in my opinion really should be straightened if used. Does anyone have any idea of the cost involved in straightening a wheel?

Thanks...

George,
Am I correct to assume that you are talking about steel wheels and not wire wheels???

Steve,

I am even if George isn't....

Gene, I sure wouldn't toss them. When I finished the TF I had a pile of parts that I had replaced and a few new that I did not use. I suppose that I could have put them on e-bay and made a couple of bucks but for the most part they were in pretty sorry shape. I didn't feel right about getting somebodys hopes up on a sale and then they find out that it was in worse shape than what they had. I offered them up for the cost of shipping on this board and pieces went all over North America including 5 wheels. They don't make the rims any more so even if they look like like junk to you, they may be better than something that someone has sitting on their T right now. I didn't get stiffed for shipping from anybody and in many cases was sent more than what it cost me. I'm not sure if they were happy with what they received as I received little feed back. Remember this stuff?

Sorry I didn't make it clear that I am dealing with an original TD stamped steel wheel. I was making progress but came down with the flu which has put the straightening project on hold for a few days.
I saw one quote on the net for $130 to true up a steel wheel which got me thinking of doing it myself.

Sure is good to see Steve W. back after his recent illness.

Will report back later with the results of my efforts.

Gene, don't let your friend junk those wheels!!!

Sorry... steering wheels on my brain!

Gordon,
Did this thread steer you in the wrong direction ??

Sent an email to Rim and Wheelworks yesterday asking about the cost to straighten a steel wheel and received this today:
******************************************************
Gene,

The price is no problem. We straighten wheels by the bolt pattern. We have a plate for the 5 lug MG. If your wheel is one of the 5 lugs from the 50s we can do that. The cost for straightening up to and including a 17" wheel is $110.00. Usually turn around time is 24-48 hours.

Best,
Ina

That doesn't sound outrageous for hard to replace original wheels, does it?

Gee, I'll bet that's the famous Gene Gillam who is featured in the latest issue of The British Marque.

Bud,

Grin...if I'm featured it's only because no one in the club will give me anything else to write about. It's tough being the club editor...especially when you live 60+ miles from every other member.
