MG TD TF 1500 - Battery Chargers

Checked the archive and was surprised to find that there were no threads under this title. So anyone in Oz recommend a battery charger that will not only bring a flat battery up to charge but will also trickle feed to keep it topped up? I'll do the usual Google searches and check out Repco and the other auto stores but I'd like to be guided by those who've been down this road. My reconditioned rubber case isn't far away from being set to work. The electrolyte is yet to be added. I'd like to ensure that this original battery is well looked after. Since this pic was taken at the re-manufacturer in Melbourne, I've fitted the LUCAS decal to the circular recess, which you can just make out on the front of the battery. Cheers

Hi Peter
I have a little charger that is magic-
It's an Arlec4----BC228
Has6-12v switch and Hi-Lo
The gauge on it goes to 6amp which it goes to the end of on HI
I use it for my mower which has a large dry cell battery (car size) that i regularly run to dead flat after about 4 hours constant use
The little Arlec will bounce it up fairly quickly if i need to finish some mowing but usually I run the charger on low and it will fully charge overnight
If i hook it up to a dead flat battery on low the gauge will hardly move to start off then gradually over a min' or so she'll be on 5-6 amps and purrs away at that, then as it gets charged up it gradually drops off to hardly anything' like 1/2 an amp and when fully charged it cuts out-I leave it hooked up and maybe once every 2-3 days you can hear it having a little top up--i just leave it on all the time and it does the rest

How's the back-----------??

Doc says it'll be about 6 months before I'm fully functional. Still on pain killers and will be for a while yet. Brain still sort of works, though 600 mg of Lyrica daily is messing with my head... Cheers

Hi Peter, good luck with the recovery! I should sometimes read more slowly as I misread Lyrica as Lycra and thought your recovery must have been very rapid for you to have taken up cycling....
I have always been happy with Ctek smart chargers but they are quite dear and lately I have had a couple from ALDI that seem to be working out just fine. I have had both smart and simple trickle/maintenance chargers from them though they are not always available.

Hi Chris and Willy. Just bought a new Arlec BC 228 as per Willy's suggestion on Ebay for $49 delivered. Sorted. Cheers

Peter,

Just saw you Post. Thoroughly recommend a C-TEK MXS 5.0 Battery Charger, They are brilliant. Prevents the battery ' boiling ' and keeps the
charge up to the correct mark. My current TF1250 Rubber case battery has been in use for four(4) years and I am confident I will get at least another two(2) years more !

The C-TEK charger cost around $100 from memory.

You'll be happy with it Peter
I'm not sure if the auto cutout when charged works on HI setting but definately works on Lo--I find that I just leave mine on low all the time
Best thing is it charges a dead flat battery whereas most of the new electronic ones won't unless they can sense some power in the battery

I also have a C-TEX charger. Great kit. Charges and conditions. Can get a version with an easy connect complete with voltage indicator.
