MG TD TF 1500 - air filter elements for 223-100

Gents,
I have those Moss "Vintage Style Chrome air filters", #223-100 (p. A26 of current catalog. Not K&N's).
I've searched archives and I'm sure it's there but I can't find a source for replacement elements. (Yea, I know, go back to the oil bath...but I like to shine chrome!). Can anyone point me in right direction?
Thanks,
Ed

EFH Haskell. Please send me a PM then i'll send you pictures .How to ..and the filter number.

Gerard, not sure what a "PM" is but if you mean my email it is efhask at roadrunner dot com.

If you want to keep those Ed, I have a pair you can have, only slightly used. I think they are almost worthless as they are so restrictive. I'm pretty sure they have a K & N set that will do a lot better job of breathing for you. If it's just the foam your looking for then you should be able to find that at a lawn mower repair shop for less money than driving down here.

Hi Gerard,
It sounds like Ed has a set of the S & H air cleaners. I have removed mine as they are very restrictive, and do not allow the carbs sufficient air. Will the filter you are recommending, improve on the original. If so, I would also be interested in looking at what you have proposed to Ed.

Yea LaVerne, it's just the foam, thanks for the offer though. Why do you say they are "restrictive"? The foam is maybe 1/4" thick and not very "dense". I realize the oil bath has no restrictions at all but don't the K & N's have a filter of some sort also?
efh Haskell

Guy's it is impossible for me to load pictures. Yes I have replaced the filter element with a K&N filter cut in half ( buy 1 filter and you get two elements )I'll send EFH some pictures incl K&N part no, Please feel free to upload those pic's I have send to EFH

Gerard, got 'em, thanks! Pix below is one of Gerard's. He cut a K&N in half and sealed one end! A few questions for him:
Did you have to use longer bolts?
Don't you have to "crush" the thicker filter to get the whole thing tight enough?
Any interference with bonnet?
Lastly, why do you consider a filter this thick less restrictive than the original?
Thanks much!
Ed

efh Haskell

EFH , no longer bolts needed,I have them on both my TD's Yes you have to alter / modify 1 radiator stay i.e bent it a bit. Airflow restriction ? How to explain this . Well if you open your mouth wide open you can inhale more air instead with your mouth almost closed.LOL.
Gerard Hengeveld

Too small Ed. Much larger flow through the K and N..even cut in half

Ed-
If you have those stupid S&H repros, it is the two layers of perforated metal that is restrictive, and the foam itself is useless as a filter. Below is a post I made long ago, comparing them to stock MGB filters. These things are killing your engine, power, and fuel mileage!

As if that's not enough, this same car has a pair of the wretched but flashy "Stellings & Hellings" air filters fitted. I've been telling him for a long time that they must go, and I am tired of having to clean the carbs every time I see the car, which usually has less than 2000 miles between visits. So I measured them, and these are the results, formerly posted on the Spridget board:
Air filters
Crappy "Stellings & Hellings" filters for HS4 SU. May not be real S&H, but the design is so bad as to make this irrelevant.
These are the chrome ones with perforated chrome sleeves on both sides of the foam element.
Airflow area available:
84 holes @ .190dia. = 84 x .095sq x 3.14 = 2.38 in sq per filter.
That is maximum at the inner sleeve, reduced by alignment of the similar outer sleeve and foam.

Airflow area of OE paper, gross:
3 3/4 D X 2 deep x .8 estimated screen coefficient = 33 in sq per filter.
Actual element is unfolded size = .550pleat width x 2sides per pleat x 3depth x 76 pleats = 250.8 in sq.
Note that ONE pleat has nearly 50% more filtering area = 3.3 in sq. than the entire S&H filter!
The S&H has about 7% of the gross and 1% of the element area available in the OE unit.
This means that not only is it very restrictive, but also that air velocity in the media is so high as to make any useful filtration impossible.
S&H also has an bad backplate, further restricting air flow, and it is so flimsy as to not retain the gasket, which shrinks into the intake, making it worse still. The car I am working on has about a 1 1/4 hole through the shrunken gasket, which is the correct 1 1/2 original type.

Wasn't there a whole thread just a few months ago about cutting filters in half?

I have the K&N filters (replaced some funny looking ones with just screen and no foam, image to follow in a day or two to see if anybody wants them) and I have no passenger side radiator brace. I want to buy and install one but it will have to be bent. Is there a thread on bending the brace or does anyone have any suggestions on bending the brace to avoid interference with the filters (I too kinda like the shiny chrome and, anyway, I don't have the manifold and original oil bath filter).

Thanks.

J.K Chapin if you need a radiator stay I have one .
If you want a picture how to bend the stay send me a email and will send you a pic,

Gerard, you've got mail.

I emailed Moss and they have no source for the original cheap foam inserts. Based on this discussion I'm gonna put my oil bath back on and see if I can go faster. Won't know for a while, it's snowing again.

Hi Gang

Has anyone come up with a number for the K&N filter that Gerald is using in the modified configuration? I have had the Stellings and Hellings on my car for 16 years, knowing that it was not the best configuration for the engine but it is what I could get when I finished it. I once again removed the filters and mounts today and went for a test drive. I can't say that there was any great performance improvement, the term MGTD performance being an oxymoron, but there was a definite engine response improvement. Time for an improvement.

Thanks

Hi Dick here is the number BM 0400.

Hi Gang;

Now that I have received my BM0400 K&N filter from Amazon, for $30 including shipping, what is the recommended method for splitting the filter? Also, while I am at it, what was used to seal the cut end before installation? A question for Ed Haskell, can you please e-mail me the pictures you received from Gerard which probably will answer my questions?

Thanks

Dick,
I spelled it wrong!

These Volks I have are nice, but I'm not sure if they'll fit the early TD carbs. PJ

Gerard:

A package arrived today. Danged post office bent the thing but it looks like it will fit perfectly :-) A little red paint from a rattle can to match the other side(any suggestions on matching the red paint?) and I'm good to go . Thanks. You've got mail.
