MG TD TF 1500 - Accessory Plug

Good Day all in TDLand,

I have been enjoying the comments about how long it takes to rebuild a TD... I am finding much more confidence reading the replies, I am not so bad then, it's only been 6 months, and I have much more to do.

As I am currently waiting for the windshield glass to come, the seats to be covered, the electrical items refurbished,(items that can be done while waiting for the warmer weather)

So, I am working on the wiring of the dash. I have a question, what were the Accessory plugs used for? Speakers? Trouble light?

If you can shed some light, it would be helpful.

Richard;

They can be used for the trouble light and also to plug in a battery charger
conrad sanders

And, don't forget the electric, attaches with suction cups, defroster.
BTW, has anyone ever found a source of plugs to fit these sockets?
Bud Krueger

Bud,

Moss has them listed as part number 156-100 http://www.mossmotors.com/cgi-bin/db2www/mossmotors/MossUSA/shop/ViewProducts.mac/report?T=22306&PlateID=3954

Does anyone know of a source for the black & red plastic rings for the sockets? I talked to Craig Seabrook, at the whitworth shop, he won't sell dash pieces unless you let him do all of the work.

Now we know why the windscreen folds flat !!!

Evan,

You might want to contact these people. Prices, even counting shipping, will be cheaper than Moss. Ask if it fits the TC/TD/TF dash - I imagine it will.

Thanks Gene,

I'll look into it!

Gene,

I ordered the socket/plug. Looks exactly like the original! What a great deal, about $20 US. Moss sells the socket set for 39.95 and the plug for 31.95.

Thanks again...

Evan,

Glad to hear it. I ordered some bonnet hinge replacement pieces (the pieces the chrome strip slides over) on Tuesday of last week. Received them tonight - well packed and excellent quality.

Another period accessory that uses the outlet is a defroster. It is simply a chrome bar with a resistance wire running across it and suction cups at each end to hold to the windscreen. Probably not too effective, but may look cute to see one installed for show. Not readily available anywhere that I know of, but I’ve seen one or two on e-bay in the last two years. The PO of my 50 TD had one…until someone offered him $400 for it!

I thought I'd reactivate this thread for fun. Just finished getting my accessory sockets working on the dash (neg ground) and bought the plug. I've just wired in a 12v power receptacle on a cord so I can power/run my phone or any USB device.
I've seen the trouble lights occasionally on ebay, is anybody making repros of these today?
What other 12v accessories have people added to their vehicles?

Geoffrey M Baker

See www.s-v-c.uk.co they sell the plug ins for GBP 15 the set.

Geoff, are those plugs from Moss or from some place else. I was just going to start a thread on where Can I get 1/8" bannana plugs to do stuff with the auxilliary sockets - volt meter, phone charger, teapot, etc.

thanks for reactivating this.

I think I saw them on ebay... $25

An auxilliary parking light required if vehicle was left on street. Hangs on door or wind wing. White to front red to rear.

If you're going to use the acc sockets, I recommend making sure to color code the plug somehow, to match the socket colors (one is red, one black). The plug looks the same which ever way you insert it. What I did was use a red and black wire, so the red wire is visible connecting to the plug, that way its easy to see which way to orient it.
Geoffrey M Baker

Like this...and yes, the red socket is on the left...
