MG TD TF 1500 - 8M x 1 studs HELP!

Does anyone have a source for 8m x 1 metric studs with an approximate shoulder length of 10m. Also looking for 12 sided 8m x 1 flange nuts. British Tool & Fastener does not carry them. I need to find some to hold my header/intake onto my Laystall. I don't want to use bolts on the aluminum threads. I have searched the internet and can't seem to locate any.

If you can't find studs you can find high strength metric rods at McMaster-Carr in 1m lengths?

Better than Grade 8 steel...

Hi Geoffrey

My problem is that everything 8m seems to be 1.25 pitch and I'm looking for 1.0 pitch. I found bolts that thread size but no studs.

McMaster sells threaded rods in 1.0 pitch 8mm. I can't see studs in that thread though.

medium strength in 25 and 50mm lengths, low strenghth rods in 30mm - 1 meter lengths. All 1.0 pitch

I know you're in a hurry...
Consider buying long 8mm cap screws- cut to length and then thread the shoulder to whatever thread length for the nuts.

I'm going that route to double nut my extra long studs as the single nuts barely catch full engagement and have come loose often with the heavy supercharger bouncing around. The SCoT blower will have 2 supports! I might also generate an SAE thread on the one end for a heavy nut and a shiny acorn locknut.

Bill - look at the chart, XPAG/XPEG Engine Fasteners in the Other Tech Articles section of my Homepage at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Look in the section labeled Studs - there may be a standard stud for the XPAG/XPEG engines that will work for you. As for a 12 point 8 X 1mm nut - good luck, you may have to settle for a 8 point nut and a washer. Keep in mind that all of the OEM fasteners for the XPAG/XPEG engines are an obsolete French Standard Metric (aka Nuffield Mad Metric) and very few fasteners available today are are going to be available in the fine metric threads. A good source for the the engine fasteners is Roger Furneaux's Mad Metrics at: http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/madmetrics.pdf Cheers - Dave

Bill,
You might also give some thought to installing 5/16-24 helicoils and go 5/16" studs. The helicoil threads would give better integrity than the original aluminum threads.
JRN JIM

I was trying to add that the threads are soooo close, you probably won't need to drill the holes, just run the oversized tap in...
8mm = .3149" vs 5/16" = .3125
1mm = 25.4 TPI vs 24 TPI

I have a bag that I got from McMasters.
I used them along the bottom of the transmission. They are just right. Do not stick out into the flywheel
How many do you need?
They have Metric hex heads.

I got some hex cap screws from True Value, 8mm X 1 - 61.99mm (3.5") long. They may be usable in a pinch to get you going.

I have studs longer that will probably get the job as my SCot blower has some really wierd dogs that must be addressed. I have time to explore my options.

Bill, see http://www.ttalk.info/Fasteners-For-XPAG-XPEG-Engines.htm and look at the studs section. Are any of these standard XPAG studs usable? Bud

Strongly suggest you contact Roger Furneaux at Mad Metrics http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/madmetrics.pdf

He immediately addresses your problem on the first page of his price list ... "They are a fine metric thread of 8mm x 1.0mm pitch, and are used in all places on the XPAG engine and gearbox instead of 5/16" BSF"

I have bought stuff from him in the past, including the sump plug with a magnet.

Thanks everyone for your help

Geoffrey, Mc Master Carr does not carry 1.0 pitch studs or rodstock. I need a length of 1.50" and it appears the closest in searching the TTalk page and Dave Dubois's page (same chart) shows the 1.75" short water pump stud. I could always stack a washer to take up the extra shoulder length if need be. I am aghast at what Moss and FTFU charges for these studs at over $10 apiece. Some of their prices I just don't get where they are coming from? MadMetric lists the studs for the water pump as well at a much more reasonable cost but the shipping and potential duties will likely keep me from buying them from over the pond. Which is likely why the previous venders mentioned are so high.

Len I received your phone call but was out of cell range at the time. I will check your suggested site today,

Jim although changing over to a 5/16 thread is also viable I think I would go to the metric 1.25 pitch just to keep from throwing another thread type into the car. Early TD ie no UNF threads. The car is confusing enough to me as it is. lol I was just trying to not have to rethread the head though I may be making it more difficult for myself than necessary.

Bill, I see them on McMaster Carr. Just go to their website and enter the stock numbers below:

Medium strength rod:
M8 × 1 (Fine)

25 mm 95245A165 12.67
50 mm 95245A166 15.71

1.5 inches is 38mm so the second number should be fine.

Low strength rod:

M8 × 1

1 m 1 93000A616 36.67

That is for 1 meter...

I would think either medium or low strength would be acceptable for this application (exhaust)?

The low strength rod has a minimum tensile strength of 58,000 psi and a minimum Rockwell hardness of B49.

Again just paste in any of the numbers on the MC site and you should be golden...

300 mm 1 98861A525 11.00

all I saw was 1.25. I'll look again Geoffrey. Thanks

Bill - "Some of their prices I just don't get where they are coming from? MadMetric lists the studs for the water pump as well at a much more reasonable cost but the shipping and potential duties will likely keep me from buying them from over the pond."

There is no duty on small purchases from England. Even when ordering several hundred dollars worth of parts from Burlen Fuel systems for fuel pumps, there has never been a duty charge on any of the orders.

I agree with Jim on the 5/16" it is so close that it could be considered a self locking thread type for the 8x10.
Len Fanelli

I'm waiting to hear back from Roger at MadMetrics. He stated that he can make any spec I need. As soon as I can get a quote I'll get them on there way

Thanks Everyone for your suggestions.

Bill,
I would recommend buying an M8x1mm die or even better a tap and die set. They are cheap and you can make as many studs as you require.
Here's a die one with 5.60€ postage to USA.

Thanks Declan for the info. I did not get a response back from Roger at Madmetrics. I put the header on with bolts for the time being and the engine is resting in chassis. I may make my own studs at a later date should I ever have to remove the header again.
