MG MGF Technical - VIN Modifications

Hey all. I have read in the files that a modification was made in the MY1999 vehicles to lower the propensity for HGF. My 1.8 MPI was manufactured Dec 1998 and first registered 19/9/1999. The VIN is SARRDWBGBXD504806. Dieter's site indicates
"XD504633 change of induction manifold sealing to GUG704094MG, Nuts FX108047L, and 3 bolts(@MPI only)" Is this the same mod that reduces HGF? I'm clutching here as my vehicle seems to be on the cusp of changes between MKI and MKII...Things like MKII hood cover and bits of foam sound deadening material that I understand were on MKII rather than MKI cars. Transition cars I suppose!! Most importantly am I likely to have a vehicle with the head gasket mods? Any ideas....Cheers, John

The first MPi mod is for the manifold gasket.

The second mod is for both VVC and MPi and that is steel locating head dowels instead of the original plastic ones.

John,

wherein the manifold gasket is IMO a most important change which should be done ASAP.

The newer head gasket with steel dowels is IMO not useful to get changed in advance. Just wait until 'it had happened'.

Not sure but there's another part which may help preventing older cars from 'shaking cylinder head syndrom'.
I reffer to the exhaust manifold support bracket. Cheap part and may be it helps.

I had it in both, the old and the current MGF and no problems so far.

So Dieter, from your comment am I to assume that I have not been lucky enough (based upon my VIN) to have received the uprated manifold gasket and head gasket with steel dowels. Do you or anyone else know what VIN number was the first to have these mods. Thanks again for the responses guys.

Dooh, please take my apology. My failure
First read, then think, then write.

Your's should have the updated manifold gasket. 504633 was the change and 504806 is later ....

Lucky you ! Another 100 quid saved.

I'm afraid that the uprated HG and steel dowels came in in early 2001 - about 2000 cars after mine was built. :(

.. don't cry !
What should the other earlier 69.607 owners say ?

Hi all,
looking at the mainfold with a strobe-light while reving the engine clearly shows the need for the exthaust bracket as mentioned by Dieter !! Not expensive - but a pig to fit even when the car is on a lift.... Vibrations may loosen the bolts / nuts so use some Lock-Tite or similare on the block bolts and the special nuts supplied NOT ordinary steel ones on the mainfold.
