MG MGF Technical - Today's dumb question

Inspired by talk on this BBS to do some DIY on the F over the weekend. I replaced the plugs and ignition leads and the change in response and smoothness of running is just fantastic. Thanks Hugh and Roger.

Also got a set of green stuff pads for the front. No problems in getting the front wheels off (thank you Rover for not over tightening!). The problem is how do you get the old pads out. Last time a changed pads (in the 70s on a Marina!) you just pulled out a split pin the extracted the old pads. No split pins obvious on the F. Thought about unbolting the whole assembly that that appear too drastic.

All help gratefully received!

Cheers

You have to pivot the assembly upwards to gain access.

If you e-mail me a fax number I will send copy of instructions.

... and be aware of the stretch this places on the flexible brake hose if the wheel was turned outwards to ease the job. Straighten the wheel and you get more length for the hose and so it doesn't stretch.

Hello there Patrick

Did changing the plugs and leads really make that much of a differnce??? If so did your 0-60 decrease???

I have found that my 1996 1.8i is somewhat lacking in power. I have thought of K&N air filter + exhaust.

I wonder if I do all this whether it'll make that much difference?

Hi Sunil,

I was not trying to suggest the car had become more powerful after the change of plugs and leads. Nor was I unhappy about the way the F was running before the change. It was just occasionally starting to complain a bit when starting after a weeks rest or after a good socking in rain if left out at night. I had seem lots of posting here (mostly from Roger) about the benefits of plug changing and others commenting on the need to change the leads with age. I therefore thought it would be a cool idea to change these items myself while the weather was good and before she hits her third birthday in December!

The change is not huge but it just seems notically smoother and quiter in running and accelerating. Lady wife, (who is not car nut) also commented on the change. I confess I don't monitor petrol use and just fill her whem empty so have no idea if I will get an improvement.

Hope this helps. I can confirm that change the plugs and leads has made a difference but the 911s are still beating me from the lights!

Cheers

"Lady wife, (who is not car nut) also commented on the change."

If I were in Court I would rest my case!!

Knowing Patrick and Lady Wife I would agree with Rog.

Mind you that said Lady Wife loves to scare the s..t out of German drivers by putting both her hands over her face as they approach - I am talking about driving on the continent in a right hand drive car.

I also followed the thread on plugs and leads. This was replacing the Platinum ones with copper ? I never noticed the part number of the plugs to use and which leads the original ones were changed with. Could you possibly supply details and where you bought them from please.
