*g hit just the send key. I think Fabrice will be offline until Monday, though.
Dieter K.

Dieter, can you get 820 boxes easily?
(I have been looking for one for last 4 months with no luck)

>(I have been looking for one for last 4 months with no luck)

No idea, I'm after one, but in DE the scrap yards got very few. I've no idea where to look, even no time to look.
The type of car is another problem.
Long term project.

BTW, I think it would be nice to know which type of standard replacement airfilter should get into that box.
I suspect there will be as well other cars with the same or similar box.
Input would be the type of standard airfilter and then looking up the reffering other car types at other websides.

I think I found the right airfilter:

To be confirmed ... or disagreed !
Anyone ?

yep !
offline at home for now, adsl router is dead :-(

my email address is fabrice.bihayNOSPAM@advalvas.be or, @ home, faNOSPAM@wanadoo.be (remove NOSPAM from both)

Well done Dieter !
I agree with you, there should be more option available.
If we use the cone filter from the K&N 57i kit, then the 820 airbox is a ideal fit, it has the perfect dimensions.
But if we use the whole round filter + airbox assembly, then we don't have to stick anymore to these dimensions. So any assembly from another car is OK, if it fits inside engine bay, and of course, if it provides good flow characteritics.

Cheers,

Fabrice

Hi Fabrice,

Glad to hear from you. I thought you were having a depression with the HGF! *LOL*

I´m dead curious about the Head Surgery you were to perform on your *F*. Things worked out for the best I may hope?

I´d like to know, in case I get my (cyl) head reworked,

cheers,
David.
David

>>> I´d like to know, in case I get my (cyl) head reworked, <<<

If you do, let me know in advance, ... thinking about that myself (going to the UK, have it fitted by a Belgian tuner, MG Rover technician), so a good fellow in this adventure is a big advantage.

cheers,
Erik

Fabrice, you have email :)
Please look up whether 'that one' is the right standard replacement part.
Dieter K.

Erik,

What period did you have in mind? end of year?

>>>..., MG Rover technician<<< the one that couldn´t get your main beam sorted for MOT? *ROFLOL*

Nothing particular was done to my cylinder head. I had it just skimmed, then refitted it with MS competition head gasket and then MS competition cam belt...
I tought also about having the head ported, gas flowed, etc. but I couldn't wait too long to have my F running...
So this will be for a next step ?? along with cams ?
Well, this is not in my future plans for now...

I fitted the 820 airbox last sunday with my K&N cone filter inside.
the filter and box were OK, but the hoses were a pig to fit :-(
It took me hours ! I had to totally remove the resonator box.
But I've to say my setup is a bit different, I've retained the K&N pipes (shortened) with Tom R's bracket, and these pipes connects to the new 80mm dia hose via a "Y-shape" connector.
I've got a picture at home, I'll send it to who wants it...
Since I fitted the airbox, I can hear a whistle when accelerating full throttle. I guess taht meens my assembly isn't fully hermetic ?

I cannot really comment about the improvements since my F has an engine problem for a week or so : makes more noise, esp @ high revs, and there's also some power loss (I'm sure about that because at some places uphill I can't go about 4.5K revs at full throttle, when before, I could go over 6K rpm)
Similar experience, anybody ?
Any ideas are welcome...
Fabrice

Fabrice,

Did you take of the head yourself? and putting it back on? If so how long did it take you?

cheers,
David.
David

Great work Fabrice - both on the head work (nice one!) and on installing the 820 airbox :o)

Surprised to read about the noise you are getting - my installation is certainly quieter than standard, with no whistling audible at any rpm.

So many ways of fitting that airbox! LOL I like your use of the 57i ducts - but I'd be a little worried about restriction to airflow due to increased resistance - I think that a single large pipe will flow better than two smaller ones? Perhaps this is why power appears restricted above 4500rpm??

Dieter, I think you've identified the correct filter there - for the 820SE. I've also asked Lesley @ filterpower.com to dig out the necessary K&N element. Also Kev, with a ZS180, has fitted the 820 airbox (now has a 190bhp motor!!!), and is currently using a Green-filters replacement 820 element - - from Kev:

>>
Green cotton filters do a replacement cylinder filter for the rover 820 and i now have one in my airbox
They also do the 76mm sleeving for the samco and you also use this sleeving with electriacal tape rapped round to wedge into the airbox opening and then clamp into it with a jubilee clip around the collar.
This is the link... http://217.204.20.36/index.htm
The filter was £30 odd quid and the 76mm sleeving £1 each and you need 4.
<<

If using the 76mm samco ducting (with fits directly to the airbox outlet, without modification), you'll also need a 76 --> 70 mm reduction pipe to mate it to the standard TB, which is readily available from a variety of sources. :o)

David,
for the HG replacement, it took me about 4-5 (long) evenings, and I got twice the help of a mechanic to perform the "critical" steps (putting the blocking tools, thightening the bolts, coolant refill, ...)
I had several manuals and printouts of BBS threads (Roger P, Jon from Norway, ...) which helped a lot too.

Rob,
I didn't get that noise *after* installing the 820 airbox. That engine problem was already there before. In fact, like you, I think that my airfilter setup is quiter now. The problem is elsewhere...
Symptoms are :
- power losses
- noise increased
- poor fuel economy

is that a sensor ? plugs/leads ?

I don't think there's airflow restriction in my setup.
Let me explain : from the airbox, there's a pipe (80 mm dia) to a 80mm dia Y-shape PVC connector (for cornices ????). The 2 other extremities of that Y are connected to :
a) a 80 mm large pipe that goes into the LH side air vent
b) both "former" K&N flexible pipes that I shortened.
I'll post a picture soon ...
So I have both : low pressure air from side intake and ram-air effect at higher speeds from k&n pipes... at least that's my theory ! ;o)))
BTW, I re-used my rubber pipe from the 57i kit to connect the throttle body to the filter, but I had to cut one third of it.

Fabrice
Fabrice

Ah! I understand now Fabrice! :o)

Hmm, odd whistling noise, poor performance and economy? How is the car idling?

There are a number of potential candidates for problems - leaking manifold gasket, incorrect cam timing etc etc.

Are there any other 'symptoms' of the problem other than the noise and the power loss?
Rob Bell

Hi,
I think I get near all the applications now. So the R288227 from Green as well.
Now going to look up reverse which cars have the same. There are !! Not only Rover or MG.
Funny job ;) and nice new BBS know how *brain storming*

Dieter K.

Nice work Fabrice. That´s quite extensive DIY´ing I reckon. Don´t know whether I´d have the guts to do that,
David.
david

Rob,
the car is idling fine.
The increased noise is not the whistling, it's hard to describe... I'd say that's "general" engine noise ! Maybe well some induction noise... It appears above 4500 rpm, and when opening full throttle. That's along with a power loss.
The leaking manifold is well a possible candidate, but I don't know how to check that...
Timing belt ? well, how could this one have slipped ? Apart from that, why not...
I shall have a look next weekend, and if I don't find, I'm afraid that will be a dealer's job :-( Maybe there's something about it logged into MEMS.

Fabrice

>but I don't know how to check that...
Get some EasyStart it's high octane gas for help starting carberator cars without choke.
Sprey around the inlet manifold and see if the engine changes note, if it does then it is a leak
Be carefull though, it is VERY flamable and will send you high as a kite if you breath it in.

Will
Will Munns

Thanks Will !
I used to have a can of that in my boot ten years ago.
I hope it won't go on fire whith the heat of the head / engine block ...
Fabrice

It shouldn't do, only a spark should set it off, but I would keep you eyebrows clear just in case ;-)
Will Munns

I had a look this W-E : the airbox assembly looks hermetical (I even wrapped some wide tape to be sure).
Some bolts of the exhaust manifold were a bit loose (my fault !) and the engine oil was on the low side (causing tappet noise). Anyway, nothing has changed : still serious power loss, unable to high rev, loud noise, whistle ...
Sad, I will go to the dealer :-(

I now have the picture of my "special" pipes setup for the 820 airbox. Anybody wants it ? Rob, for your website ?
Fabrice

i want the pictures!!! ;)
Benjamin

Hi Fabrice,

yes, I love to have your arrangement pix. Drop me a mail :o)

Sorry to hear that the engine is still not behaving itself. Let's hope it something simply like a poor sensor connection.

Keep us posted - this is a perplexing problem.
Rob Bell

Well,
I'm now 90% sure that I've found the cause of my engine's idleness: the cat !
Looks like there are some "parts" moving and rattling inside. When I tap it, it rattles... and doing that, I even managed to get my F return to "normal power" for a short period of time. After that, gas flow was blocked again, and the whistle noise (probably from the exhaust) came back. I'm off for a snowboarding weekend, but next W-E, satuday AM, my cat will be off the car and emptied of its ceramic cells ! Well, the noise will be another story with the SP exhaust ;o)
So cost : 0 quid... until the MOT :-(
