MG MGF Technical - TF160 brake discs

I see that you can now get 3rd party discs for the front of the TF160 at slightly less than the stupid OEM price - http://www.brakes4u.co.uk/products.asp?id=12268

The front discs on mine have a fair ridge on the outside edge so I guess they're due for replacement (25K miles - sound about right?). I was wondering if anyone has any experience of these (think they're EBC discs) and what the difference is between "D1176" and "GD1176" - the latter seem to be dimpled and grooved from the picture. Worthwhile or not? Never had a problem with the standard setup.

Also, is it worth changing the pads at the same time? Greenstuff are listed, and anything which will cut the dust down has to be a good thing.

I've just replaced the rear pads on my 160 with green stuff Pads and I have to say that ATM there seems to be more brake dust than before. My rear wheels now look as dirty as the fronts which still currently have OEM pads on.

The set of pads all round were About £89 from EBC Direct if that is of any use to you. :)

As for the ridge I don't think I'd be over concerned about changing the discs unless this was causing a problem. :)

Thanks, Paul. Borrowed a micrometer today so will try to measure the discs and see if they're still withing spec or not. Did you find the pads lasted as long/longer/shorter than the discs?

Must admit I did not check the thickness of the discs at all, I would imagine they are well within acceptable tolerance. I find it hard to believe that for normal road use and with no brake related problems that the discs would wear sufficiently to the point where they would be near the end of their life after 35K miles. :)

Since having the car from new in March 2002 I've just covered 36,000 miles. I'm still running on the original discs all round. The original front pads were replaced at about 25,000 miles with OEM pads. I've only just replaced the original rear pads after about 35,000 to 35,500 miles with Green Stuff pads.

The rear pads really did need doing though and although there was some pad material left I did actually stop using the car for a day or so while I waited for the Green Stuff pads to arrive - The car was starting to sound like a castrated donkey! ;-)

Maybe I'm worrying about nothing then! I'm not heavy on brakes and quite a lot of my miles are motorway - it's only the worrying ridge that I'm going by, it must be close to 1mm deep and the service limit is 20mm from a new thickness of 22mm (i.e. 1mm on each side). Car was serviced by Trident 6 months/about 6k miles ago and they didn't mention anything so fingers crossed!
