MG MGF Technical - STORAGE COMPARTMENTS

I'VE GOT A 99 'S' VVC WHICH I'VE HAD FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS. WHEN I GOT THE CAR THE CATCH FOR THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT BETWEEN THE SEATS WAS MISSING. I HAVE TRIED BOTH MY LOCAL DEALERS WHO CANNOT SUPPLY ME WITH THE PART, ONE SAYS THAT IT ISN'T AVAILABLE AND I'D HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE CONSOLE, THE OTHER SAID THEY WOULD FAX ROVER AND I'VE HEARD NO MORE SINCE. ALSO THE CAR HAS A CLUNK ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. YOU HEAR IT MORE IF YOU'RE IN THE CAR ON YOUR OWN, WHEN YOU'RE IN THE LOWER GEARS WHILST IN SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC. (IT CAN CLANK WITH TWO IN ON ROUGH ROADS OR OVER SPEED BUMPS.) ONE LAST THING THE FRONT WINDOWS LEAK EXACTLY THE SAME A TRICKLE DOWN THE DOOR DIRECTLY UNDER MIRROR ADJUSTER. COULD THIS BE THE WINDOW STOPS IV'E READ SO MUCH ABOUT?
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
DESPITE THIS I STILL THINK THE CAR IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE, FORGETTING TO MENTION VERY FUN TO DRIVE.

Ian, stumbled across a bit of info on the windows stops on www.gregh.co.uk if that's any good. Remember reading something but not sure about the content. Suppose every little helps. Good luck.

Tony (also recent VVC owner !!)

P.s. agree with your final comments !!

Ian,

Search the archive at the top of the page for a thread called 'Leaking seals near door mirrors'.

Ian, forgot to mention, try: www.mgfworld.com/windowstop

This might also help.

Storage compartment catch.

Not sure if this is available on it's own, might be worth giving an MGF breakers a try:
Also, it is worth knowing that the 'male' part of the catch can come away from the bin leaving it stuck in the 'female' part. Check the female part (on the lid) if the male part is there it will look like a small square stuck between two rollers, you never know, you may still have the originals! :-)

Clunk noise.

Not sure about this one, sounds mechanical if it is happening in slow moving traffic. If it was suspension related you would expect to only hear it during cornering at speed. Can you give us any more information? Tricky given the nature of this forum i know but this is a little worrying.

Leaks.

Doesn't sound like window stops to me. Window stops are plastic inserts (later ones look like a plastic bolt) that fixes through the window glass inside the door panel and prevent the window extending too far out of the door during closing. If they are gone then they will cause leaks, but this is less noticable than the fact that you can't close the hood or doors properly with the windows closed fully! The leak you are describing sounds more like the wing mirror cheeters being poorly adjusted. The wing mirrors mount onto a black rubberised triangle known as a cheeter. If they are poorly adjusted then they can close the drainage channel in the windscreen frame when the door is closed. This causes the water to leech into the cabin at the top of the cheeter where it pools on top of the door panel under the mirror adjuster before running down the face of the inner door panel (over the speaker). There is some minor adjustment to them to ease the situation and there are also several revisions to the windscreen frame rubbers - have a chat with your nearest dealership as they should be able to sort this out.

P.S. On forums and chat rooms, block capitals is known as SHOUTING, used for emphasis only. Not a problem, but it makes the text difficult to read.

Clunk noise.

Does it happen just once in a journey - some F's clunk as the coolant pipes warm up, rather like the central heating pipes in my sh*te house.

Cheers everyone for the advice. Sorry for shouting but new to this game.
The leak sounds very much like the wing mirror cheeter.
This clunk is very hard to describe. It doesn't happen all the time in slow moving traffic, but it is a common occurrence unfortunately. The sound is like knocking when going over rough surfaces. You hear it more with the top down and it appears to be coming from the rear passenger corner. The sound is also apparent when first started from cold - it clanks just before it fires up.
It's good to know that help's available!!
Thanks again Ian.
P.S. The car is fine on smooth surfaces and corners well (even better when the wife's not in the car!!!)

Rear passenger corner engine bay components:

Gearbox
fuel pump
Fuel Tank
MEMS
air filter assembly
Trottle body
Distributor

Of these i would suspect the first 2, although i am not sure how the fuel pump would make a clank type noise. I originally thought clutch from your description, but if it makes the noise on start up (ie when the clutch is not engaged) then i am once again puzzled. It certainly sounds to me like it might be gearbox related though, mainly from the location of the sound and the conditions it occurs under. Don't wish to worry you, i may be wrong being only an enthusiast like yourself and not being connected to the auto industry.

Another possibility is the fuel tank, i assume there is a 'ballcock' like float sensor inside and (if the workings of a toilet are anything to go by!!!) there is a possibility that it may not be retained properly - taking a bit of a flyer with this one as i have no real idea of how the fuel level sensor works!! I'm sure someone else will be able to point out if i am way off the mark here! :-)

I've noticed a clunk from behind the passenger compartment over the last 6 or so months. Noticed in slow-ish traffic, usually with the take-up of drive, or under braking.

Given the number of standing starts (4ish thousand rpm, drop clutch kind of affairs) at sprints/hillclimbs, not to mention the traffic light grand prix, age and mileage (6.5 years, 63k miles), I wonder if the engine-stay bush may be on the way out?

Your's is a younger car Ian, but I wonder if it may be a similar problem?
Rob Bell

Ian, I think I know where you can get hold of one of the catches for your glove box which one is it? give me a mail and I will put you intouch.
Your noise may be the rear sub frame mounts? do you know the previous history of your VVC, has it been bent?
If you are wanting to compare aging VVC's strange clanking noises, as we are both Northumbrian based perhaps we could compare notes?
