MG MGF Technical - SRS warning light problem

I have a problem with the SRS warning light on my 1998 VVC 'F' in that, if I start immediatly after inserting the ignition key the SRS warning light stays on (now a MOT failure),but if I wait 5 seconds BEFORE turning the key to the final position to start the engine it goes out after 4 seconds and remains out for the full journey. I have a workshop manual (which states the light should go out within 5 seconds) and all the components of the system are very inaccessable and are not serviceable items. Are there 'usual suspects' or things to try first, before taking it to a garage with TestBook.Any suggestions will be appreciated

Ron,
The usual suspect number 1 is the connections for the pretensioners which lie under both seats. Although the most common one to be a nuisance is the driver's side because it gets disturbed more often by seat adjustments. But normally the light doesn't go out if left a bit longer as you describe; so you may have a different suspect there. It would be worth moving how the driver's side pretensioner loom lies and seeing if the symptoms remain. Let us know...

Hi Charles
Thanks for your comments. I have visualy checked the connector under the seat and it appears ok, my car does not have a passenger air bag. I have trawled thro' the archives, but no-one has mentioned the symptom of the SPS light going out and staying out after waiting 5 seconds before engaging starter then the light saying off.I have just put the car back on the road after 10 months

Hi Ron,

It's very likely to be the rotary coupler under the steering wheel. These can be bought for about a tenner on ebay. When replacing it you will need to disconnect the battery at least 20mins before removing the airbag. Make sure that the wheels are aligned straight ahead and when you get the new rotary coupling it should be held in place with a piece of tape, do not be tempted to rotate the coupling before fitting it.

It's all pretty straight forward once you have the wheel off.
