MG MGF Technical - Rolling Road Day??

Some time ago there was a thread where Rob mooted the possibility of a Rolling Road day on June 4th.

http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=200602161507374054

Is it a happening thing?
Steve Ratledge

Steve,

Rob has been a bit indisposed recently. I believe it's all booked and that Rob will be back on the case shortly.

Dave
Dave Livingstone

Rob Bell

Sorry Rob but you'll have to cross me off the list for this one :o(
The new engine is still not fitted, waiting till after Sweden (& for finances to become available lol)
Looks like I will be going to the MGOC event at the Cotswold Wildlife Park this Sunday instead, which is a lot closer to home (& free apart from fuel costs ;0)
Steve White

Still not fitted? What a shame Steve - will let you know when next we head to Northfolk :o)
Rob Bell

Her in doors says yes! So I am free to come and see what the 633 cams have added. They are the only change since I was last at emerald.

So Rob - we will get to view the results of our handy work...

Weather looks better that last time too :-)

'So Rob - we will get to view the results of our handy work...'

I look forward to finding out the fruits of our labours on that snowy afternoon.

Tim
Tim

To be honest Tim, most of the credit goes to you and Rob. I was definatly just the spanner monkey.
Steve Ratledge

Hi,

just to clarify my car is a 1.8 non vvc, having never been to a rolling road session , i am looking forward to it...while im there i may enquire about the emerald programmable ecu.

matt
Matt

hi,

I was wondering does the rolling road have any effect on the tyres, basically am i likely to see severe tyre wear after the session?

could someone please answer the above question, all answers are greatly appreciated.

matt
matt

You will suffer more tyre wear getting there! your car is only on the rollers for a few mins. However, you should make sure that all is generally well. Tyre pressures, oil water that sort of thing.

Other than that just turn up and chat about MGs.
Steve Ratledge

It wont effect your tyres at all Matt, they lubricate the rollers if the tyres do get warm and you wont be on there that long..

Regarding the Emerald ECU you will be able to see one at work in 'real time' as I have one fitted and if all goes well I will be fitting bigger injectors and a PBV and Dave Walker will be tweaking the calibration for me to get the best out of it..

See you there..

Stu
Stu Dickens

Thanks for the details on the car Matt :o)

The Emerald is a great bit of kit - and am looking forward to seeing what Dave Walker can squeeze out of Stu's engine with the larger injectors :o)

hi,

would jus like to say thankyou for all the answers and help ive received so far. however im young (23) quite in experienced as a driver, therefore i was wondering if i could follow/tag along someone on the way to emerald as i doubt i would find it by myself.

to be more specific i live in middlesex, and have easy access to m4,m40,m25 motorways, possibly i could meet and follow someone from one of those avenues.

regards ,

matt

Hi Matt

I have no doubt we will be arranging a meet somewhere, perhaps south mimms services or something, just keep an eye on this thread !!

Stu
Stu Dickens

Yup - could probably do that service area Matt/ Stu - see you there?

Regarding breakfast, Stu suggested the Little Chef right next to the nearest Shell Garage to Emerald (If people want to top up with Optimax! ;o) ), which is located near Attleborough on the A11.

Map location: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=607087&y=297140&z=0&sv=NR17+2PU&st=2&pc=NR17+2PU&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

It is slightly pass the Watton turn off from the A11 - but a bit of cross country work on the B1077/B1108 looks easy enough - and a nice drive to boot :o)
Rob Bell

Not going to be able to make it sadly, the F is out of commission for a while - poor timing I know, since this neck of the woods is finally basking in sunshine... 8-(

Hope you all have fun, I look forward to hearing the results - some big numbers would appear likely!
Mike Hankin

That's a shame Mike :o(

Looks as though we're going to be a few cars short at Emerald... :o(

List now stands at:

Rob Bell

Matt - been chatting with Stu - we're planning to meet up at South Mimms at 7.15 (oh, what a lovely late start ;o)) - and then head north to meet the others for Breakfast at 9.00 near the RR.

Drop me an email at robert dot m dot bell at kcl dot ac dot uk and I'll give you my mobile number.

Cheers
Rob Bell

There is room for a few more folks..

It's going to be a lovely drive up and back to Norfolk looking at the weather...

And only £30 to put your car on a rolling road for a few power runs is a real bargain ! You even get lunch thrown in !!

Emerald are a very busy company, we don't get chance to do this too often. It's unlikely to happen again before next year so if you are in two minds etc.....

Stu
Stu Dickens

Rob, can I meet up with you and Stu at South Mimms too?
Steve Ratledge

Steve,

The more the merrier - see you there at 7.15am!!

Dave
Dave Livingstone

What happened Matt? We wondered what happened to you - and waited for as long as we could...

Missed a great day! How many horse power did you gain again Steve?

Personally, I am pretty happy. A pair of TF135 cams, a quick and dirty port and a 4-2-1 manifold revealed a stomping 20 bhp gain over the last run at Emerald last year :oD

Peak torque is fractionally down though - lost about 3 lb.ft, and the peak is higher in the rev range (a characteristic of a tuned engine) - but I am wondering whether there is more to be gained by checking and correcting cam timing; currently on standard cam timing - and that may not be the ideal place to start... :o)

Dave - shame we weren't able to track down the mystery noise - needs further investigation. Exhaust still seems the most likely candidate doesn't it?
Rob Bell

After adjusting the fueling it topped out at near-as-dam it 160bph. On the drive home it was a lot more responsive and generally more fun :-)

I could definatly feel the extra torque when accellerating.
Steve Ratledge

Hi chaps, I've just come back from my hols and doing a bit of catching up - what were everyones results then, it was a really hot day so I hope that didn't pull your numbers too much!
Tony

I saw a comfortable 146 bhp with 128 lb.ft torque Tony - which represents a cool 20 bhp gain in power over the previous run at Emerald in February 2005 :o)

Which reminds me, I shall email Dave Walker to get hold of the files for the day :o)
Rob Bell

Pretty good going, you must be well pleased with your fettling! We were on hols in NW Norfolk in the TF but a trip to the otherside of the county was vetoed by SWMBO or I might have joined you. We had a great week, roof off everyday and just enjoying some of the best roads in the country.
Tony

Not bad - I've got VVC power out of a MPi using pretty mild, standard cams, whilst running MEMS1.9! :o)

Possibly a little more to come with a bit more fettling :o)
Rob Bell
