MG MGF Technical - Removeable Steering Wheel

Anyone know if there is a removable steering wheel available for the MGF.

Reason is I've moved into a new flat and the MGF is no longer garaged anymore at nights and I'm only a 4 minute walk from my office so it's not being driven as much anymore either and as such lies dormant outside my flat on the street.

I'd sleep a bit easier at night if I knew some tea leaf couldnt drive away with my pride and joy!

Can anyone help?

Bob, most aftermarket wheels will fit the F, MOMO for instance (they also do a removable version). But the problem you are going to have is the airbag.

You can delete the bag if you want, and pull the SRS fuse (but this will disable the entire system), but is this a desirable solution? Probably not. There is also probably an issue with insurance, the car is fitted with an airbag as standard, deleting it affects the car's performance in an accident (from a driver injury point of view) and this could lead to an insurance premium hike (potential injury layouts).

Food for thought.

I thought this would enable you to fit a momo wheel, but retain the SRS system

(Obviously still losing the airbag tho.)

Paul, that's exactly the adapter you need - but whether it is compatible with a quick-release kit, I don't know - best talk to the Momo experts.

Bob, your best best might be one of those highly visible, bright yellow steering lock things that encompass the entire steering wheel. It'd be a lot cheaper, and you won't loose your airbag...

I know but I'll feel like a proper racing driver with a removable one!!! Lol!
Bob Millar

Well, I can't argue with that! Plus, you could always get one of those steering wheels with shift-lights built in - as per Ferrari F1! LOL

Sorry Bob, there aren't that many "proper" racing drivers with shaved heads so you would still stick out :-)

He could paint it to look like a crash helmet .....

Richard Burns????

Bob

I agree that Richard Burns is a "proper" racing driver. Can a sample of 1 be considered representative?

Most of the quick release kits I have looked at act as a "spacer" to bring the steering wheel closer to the driver.

Problem here is one minor problem of them not being road legal (think primarily on as they disable the horn, but other arrangements can be made.)
And second slightly more worrying one is with no air bag and the steering wheel closer to the driver, the chance of your head impacting the steering wheel is substantially increased.

Now the challenge is if you can find a hub-adaptor and quick-release combined.
