MG MGF Technical - petrol smells

I have had my P reg MGF from new about every six months I have had to have a new petrol tank as the interior of the car smells of petrol.the new tank stops this for about 6/9 months and then the smell returns. My garage have fitted 4 new petrol tanks but still the smell returns.Rover told them to carry out a full valet but this has not solved the problem.
I am now awaiting the next episode.

Am I the only one with this problem?? i think not

Can anyone help me??

Please try

Many Thanks

One question - how often do you drive you F?

Hello there David

I have the same problem with petrol smells inside the car, I drive mine every day. Question: Did you have to pay for the petrol tanks or did they do it for free???

David,
you are not alone: I have the third tank in my '97 MGF now - and to keep it short: I GAVE IT UP.
The interior starts smelling again and again (but only when having the car parked in the garage overnight and under certain weather conditions). I'm afraid there's no solution.

Maybe you need to get the dealer to get a Rover/mg specialist in to check the tank replacement?

I had my (P-reg) tank replaced 2 years ago, and it hasn't smelt since.

I wonder if they're "fitting them wrongly" - isn't there some specific breather routing they have to do too - or indeed maybe there's something else wrong like the fuel cap that is causing petrol to be forced out...

I have had a petrol smell, before replacing the tank the garage said they had a list of other things to try first. they fiddled with the fuel sender unit and that seemed to solve the problem, but the smell has started creaping back.

how bad is the smell you are getting, i am under the impression that if its due to a poras tank the smell is very bad. in my car the smell isn't to bad IMO.

just look at it as a reminder that the engine is only just behind me. i might get it looked at again if it gets much worse. and as above its not there all the time.

What iguess i'm trying to say dave, is, have the tried fixing anything else, it might not be the tank at all

I always leave the windows open a bit when parking in the garage, otherwise I am greeted by the dreaded petrol smell in the morning.

I have same problem. I just bought a F on Dec 99. I guess I should bring to the Rover... I shall find out what they are going to do...

Akira,
when was it built ?

You can check it here and/or send your individual VIN.

PS. satisfied with the 4-free replaced tank at my 05/96 MGF.

This must be a 'batch' problem as I have never had this with my 4.5 years old MGF and it is parked in a closed garage at night.

Jup, surely, only very few where obviously involved. (Talked to the DE service head in March about it.) Most of them where done under warranty/goodwill.
But now new cases in the end of 99 ??
Should be another failure. IMO
