MG MGF Technical - Oil change/engine access

I just carried out an oil change, the mineral stuff gets a little dirty after a few months, works well though, no tappet noises.

Since last enter the engine bay I've replace the rear T-bar with the MKII model. I haven't really thought much about the implication until now.

Where before I had nice easy access too all of the bolts retaining the engine cover in place, I now find it a bit awkward to get to the three under the new T-bar speaker box. Not being prepared for this I didn't have a 10mm Ratchet spanner and a regular socket just doesn't fit. Is this a common problem with the MKII cars or did MGR do something about it....? This little problem added 20 minutes to the removal and replacement of the engine cover :o(

This did make me think though... It is possible to get to the oil filler cap on the engine through the boot grill (just, so, is there a funnel with a bendy enough neck which could eliminate the need to remove the engine bay cover? In fact by the time it took me to remove the cover and replace it it would have been quicker to have fed the oil through the top-up cap...

Anyone got any thoughts or any other experiences...?

I'm not usually known for my patience but I use the top-up cap without going mad. For the other cap, Halfords sell a funnel with a convoluted bendy spout almost a foot long - if you ram a bit of old heater hose over the end it would reach the main cap OK...

Welcome to the wild and wacky world of the MkII T-bar. Yes. It's bloody fiddly. I think you just have to accept it. It's to do with the rear speakers, isn't it?

To to sum up.

From David, Berkshire:
Bendy funnel is an option or patience... Will try both next time.

From David Bainbridge:
MKII T-bar / engine cover access - Live with it...! Must get a rathet 10mm spanner :0)
