MG MGF Technical - Nuts, TF HGF

Well, it has happened :( 2003 TF135 with PRT, 37k, always keep below 3k till warm blah blah. The coolant warning beeper first did its thing in feb, then about once every 2 weeks as it was losing about 1cm over that period. Bank hols weekend it has a dipstick covered in Baileys, humph. It was going into B+G for a check to find the leak on the wed anyway so the good old RAC took it down for my on last Tuesday. New LR gasket and rail, new belts, pump, SS underbody pipes etc - that will be £1000 please. I must say, the coolant level warners are such a good thing, my wife(x2b soon) would have run it dry without question and that would have cooked it. At least it is now built to the latest spec and will hopefully last a good while, I hope so as it will be my car soon and I always intended keeping this one. Back in Nov it had one of the main hoses changed as it had chafed on the downpipe, I do wonder if that work played a part in this but probably not. I did get them to do the cat bolts while it was in so will console myself with a nice noisy exhaust at some point soon :)

Hard luck mate, my daughters 2002 has just blown for the second time. Its getting the MLS gasket and oil rail this time, but I guess success depends on how damaged the engine is from the previous HGF's. Is the head soft, are the liner stand prouds within spec etc.

Bad luck Tony.

If the N series hasn't sorted this then I can't see the new mgtf selling.

On my coolant tank the float won't switch till its a good few cm down from the seam, how low was it when it went off in Feb ?

I was quite surprised I must admit. It has never used a drop. The head seems fine, never got overheated or ran out thanks to the beeper and I assume the liner hights were ok - B+G said it had failed in one of the corners where an oil way and waterway are very close and only separated by this tiny bit of rubber goo on the gasket. It may be a new fill of antifreeze back in nov that found a weakness, I seem to remember that stuff always found a weak point from cars in the past. I have been posting on here for the past 5 years and thought I knew how to look after it but I think at the end of the day some can just go after a certain number of cycles and head shuffles - it has done about 13k in the last 7 months. As for the level warning, mine seems really sensative at just under 1cm below the seam, not much to play around with at all which is probably no bad thing. It has never gone off though slinging the car about though.
