MG MGF Technical - Noisy instrument cowl
Hi All, Got a strange problem with my 99 F. The instrument cowl is a little noisy. It looks like the rear of the cowl (closest to windscreen) is not fixed down and when I hit a bump, it flaps up and down about 2-3 cms. I'm not sure how to get the instrument cowl off so I can have a look at this and try to fix it. Anyone got a guide they can point me to? Thanks Sonny |

Sonny, It sounds as though the lugs at the front end of the cowl may have broken - a common fault due to poor design. Have a look at my site at......http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/Tacho.html and look about half way down the page. There's a couple of photos of the 4 screws to remove the cover off the intruement face. Then you can see the other screws that hold the top cowl. I found my cowl had broken as well. The screws that hold the cowl to the dash adjacent to screen come from underneath the dash! I bedding the screws and brackets in silicon mastic and weighted the whole thing down until it hardened. It stopped the noise. Which reminds me - I must get he photos and details up on my web site. |

>I must get he photos and details up on my website. Hurry up, mate :) http://www.mgfcar.de/dash/dk_DCP_5746.jpg Location oh the three lugs. Bolt heads hidden in fresh air channel. So no option to access the screws. I think what Tony said is the only easy solution. Several more have done it already. |

Sonny, here is a link to an old post of mine about the exact same problem. You may find it helpful. http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=2005021310000626249 Cheers, Branko |

Hi All, Thanks for all the help. Got the console apart on the weekend and used a bit of glue to stick it all back together. I wonder if MG ever heard of "latent defect" during their manufacturing lives? Have to say it was tempting to fiddle with the odometer whilst I was there and see if I could drop 20k's off the clock. Maybe not today ;-) Cheers Sonny |

Okay, details are now up on my website. Go to http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/InstrumentCowl.html |

Tony, well done. I'll crosslink to mgfcar.de >Refitting is the reverse of this procedure - don't forget to check that those 3 little rubber covers are in place! http://www.apttony.co.uk/Pics/Tacho17.JPG This one is nice ;) Now I know where the part should get that I recently found below the steering wheel on the carpet in my car !! (I wonder where I put it and whether I can re-find it to put in place) ;) LOL |
