MG MGF Technical - MOT Emissions

My '96 F VVC, just had 60k service (inc belts) and clutch change, then toddled of for an MOT only to fail thru excessive emissions.

The car has been stood for some time (6-9 months) during which the clutch release lever on the gearbox ceased and maybe something has happened to make the exhaust 'dirty'.

The garage is going to 'try' changing the lambda sensor to see if this brings down the emissions level. It seems to me that progressively changing the sensors and or cat could be a very expensive way of finding the problem.

Any better ideas?

Hi Phill,
Just want to pass the MoT ? Drive the car until the tank is nearly empty (carry a spare with a few liters if worst happends !) Buy 2 cans of carburettor alcohol = together about 1 liter , (the ones used during wintertime to prevent any ice forming in the fuel-lines) . Put it into the tank just before going to the MoT. Pass the test and immediatly fill up with petrol to dillute the alcohol.
Then of course it is wise to really rectify the problem when time and money permits ;)

Regards , Carl.

Phill,
The garage should of supplied you with a print-out from its gas analyser (used to check emissions).
This will give a good indication of where the problem lies.
Did it fail both the Natural idle test and the fast idle test?
It may only be a blocked air filter or dodgy spark plugs for instance...
Mark.
