MG MGF Technical - Milky headlights

Problem solved?

Try these codes for replacements of your Milky headlight lenses - courtesy of Chris, cleveland many moons ago (May last year)

XBQ100710 LEFT HAND

XBQ100700 FOR RIGHT HAND

Hope these are the right parts - they come in as a headlight repair kit at 54.74 pounds each or $238.00 Nz each.

Can someone come back to me and advise whether or not we have cracked it

Mind you at thast price I would go for the TF conversion

Hi David how are you doing?

Remember the old lights you sent me? (damaged ones) They had relatively clean lenses (a lot cleaner than mine), but had the reflective part badly melted (the silverness has disappeared, and showed white plastic) around the bulb area. Thus the heat is not dissipated enough and started melting the surrounds. Similar with mine, but not as bad.

I still think Dennis' idea of the surrounds is more viable. We were thinking of re-silver plating the surrounds locally, but I haven't had the money or time to check out yet.

But yes, the milky lenses are not helping either, but milky headlight should change the tone of the colour more than the opagueness? (well bit of both really)

Jesus, those lenses are expensive!

Anyway how are you?

Regards,
Hanah

Hi Hanah

No biopsy results yet so as I am feeling great - therefore Iam - did a five hour bush walk yesterday - 90% vertical.
Hope you are having a great start to the year - good luck with this years studies.

Sounds as if you are on the right track with the lights. I had put 100 watt bulbs in which wuld have generated a fair amount of extra heat hence the melting.

Nice not to have the problems with the TF front.

The conversion is great - still a crowd puller. New Numberplate

Purple G is in place

Regards to all

David, Hannah,

I think those part numbers are for the outer front glasses of the headlights, not the lenses inside. I contacted Valeo, who make the headlights and they informed me that the lenses were not available separately.

cheers

XBQ100710 LEFT HAND

XBQ100700 FOR RIGHT HAND

I believe are part numbers for the outer headlamp cover not for the inner lenses.

See the 2003 MGF General archive thread "milky headlights" (or possibly headlamps). Bruce has contacted the unit manufacturer and his commenys are worth reading.
JohnP

sorry Bruce, I missed you while looking in archive.
JohnP

No probs JohnP

Bye the way John, are you the John Pickup who was going to Techspeed last week?

Bruce
Bruce Caldwell

Sadly not - I wish I could afford to go to Techspeed :-) I guess if I sold the motorbike and mortgaged the wife I could have a nipple job but at present I could barely afford a nipple pierce.
JohnP

Nope, that's me... haven't been yet, need to get some money together.
John Pickup

Aah, Hello John Pickup,

I did offer on your thread to give you a lift from Rugby station (West Coast Line) from and to Techspeed but I expect the thread disappeared before you saw it. Rugby is only an hour from Euston and a fifteen minute drive from Techspeed. I have little to do these days so it would give me something to do. Let me know if you want to take up this offer by contacting me direct on mgfinbraunston@aol.com

Bruce

PS Sorry for hijacking thread
Bruce Caldwell

JohnP,

Look forward to seeing some pictures of the nipple job!!

Returning to the question of lenses...

Sounds as though replacement is the only viable answer - although this clearly is not a permanent answer.

If heat is causing the de-silvering, would "heat vents" (a posh way of saying, drill a couple of holes in the top and bottom of the reflector dish) be beneficial???
Rob Bell

Or just remove the back covers of the lights? A short tube fitted in place of the cover (approx 75mm dia) might do the trick to prevent splashes of water entering.

Hi David again,

That's a great news! Since you are an optimistic guy, you will be fine...! Just don't let yourself down. Yeap, I know you told me about the Purple G. My number plate has been on my car since November, and it's a crowd puller when parked on High Street, they point at the number plate... :-)

'TOYMGF'

It's my toy!

Yeah, I am sure the TF will pull the crowds, as I have seen no TFs on the road yet here.

Hello Rob! Long time no see!

I mentioned before, TF has heat vents in the headlight assembly. So yes, I am sure having a heat vent would help the situation at least a bit. Maybe on the front part of the lights, just like the TFs?

John thanks for the information. From my memory, you cannot get the inner lenses separately.
Hanah Kim

Hi Hanah, Dave,
Sorry I've been trying to sort out an engine vibration with our Rover 400 and also fit a rear ARB. Dave, I saw your car in Cable St. just before Xmas - looks impressive. Also saw the lamps that Hanah had, spoke to a company in Auckland who resurface plastic reflectors. Gave the details to Hanah to follow up. Will need to do mine once it gets knocked back for a WOF. As Rob suggests I'll mill a couple of slots when I get the lamps apart to let a bit air though.

The only response I've had from our personal plate on the MG was from some sheila who just said "crap" - just what we don't need is a bird crapping over our car.

The Rover also has a personal plate it was recycled from our Toy – Toyota – we’ve had that plate since ’95.

Dave - would like to catch up sometime - I've fitted the 52mm TB and will fit the 160 airbox once the mounting plate arrives.

Cheers Dennis
Dennis

Just wondering about those slots Dennis - are they not there as standard in order to keep dust and moisture out? Would slots cause more problems than they solve?

Hi Hanah - how've you been keeping? :o)

Regarding vents in the 'front' of the head lamp assembly, I doubt that'll help - heat build up is likely to be behind the dipped beam lens.
Rob Bell

Hi Rob - I haven't decided on the exactly how or were but somewhere behind the lens. Once I've taken it apart I'll figure it out and post my thoughts.
Dennis

Okay, keep us posted Dennis :o)
Rob Bell

Sorry about late reply Dennis and Rob.

It's great to *see* you guys again here!

I have been quite busy over the new years, and the summer paper 'Politics'... so many things happening at the same time.. relatives over / friends over from Korea, so I gave them a tour, down to Rotorua.

Dennis, if you are actually waiting for me to check out the price for you, I could do that soon. Please let me know. (re-plating the plastic)

Rob, have you finished renovating your house yet? I know it was going to be a long DIY job, but I am sure you finished the kitchen by now? :-)
I am also deciding weather I should start studying for USMLEs... or not. What's your suggestion Rob?

Hanah Kim

Hanah, nope, Kitchen still work in progress - as and when funds allow... (got to keep doing those track days to keep sane! LOL)

USMLE is probably worth doing now - just depends on how much time you've got - but since you are revising similar stuff at the same time... why not?
Rob Bell

Rob, Wilco – Hi Hanah, if it's not to inconvenient could you please take Dave's broken reflector around for them to review and cost, I assume they are fairly close to you. Many Thanks D
Dennis

Thanks Rob, then I should really consider doing it soon.. :-)

Dennis, yes I will do that this week.
Will let you know.

Hanah and Dennis

Sorry to be silent - been away and am now trying to get back into the work habit. not easy. 2500km with the family and a caravan. I guess it doen't help that Iam refusing to wear long trousers. except for formal meeetings. all other days shorts. Court work starts shortly so that will be the end of the shorts. Still nusring a sore foot. a mechanic lowered a hydrolic hoist on to it. fractured every toe - and as it was a cxrush injury no displacement. Had it xrayed today as a hedge against future problems. ACC and all that. But enough of that.

Dennis You canm contact me at work on 2360081 or after hours 2368317.

Keeping my fingers crossed for both of you - it would be a real plus if you can sort out the headlight problems.

Compliments of the season to all readers and ferllow enthusiasts.

david
David

Welcome back David sorry to hear about the foot, how come the mechanic allowed you to stand so close to the hoist? This day and age they are meant to warn you of all hazards or not allow you in the shop.
I'll try to call you over the weekend. Cheers D
Dennis

Hi Dennis

Yes - my own fault they could not see me because the bonnet was up and as it was a hurried job - I wa loading tools back ino the bonnet as the hoist came doen. took one step forward with my right foot and bang. Totally my fault

Phone numbers

After hours 2368317 if not home leave a message with the fridge. you will understand if the fridge answers the phone

Okay Okay.....

Solved it.... I went out and spent the 150 quid for a pair of new headlamp assemblies after 45 minutes removing the bumper and refitting i have fantastic headlamps, all that I'm going to do now is get some of those 30% brighter jobs and then I'll be cooking......

The Milky headlamps were becoming dangerous when driving in the country.
