MG MGF Technical - MGF Exhaust
Hello, I am new MGF owner. I wanted to ask a question, so here goes.... I have a MGF 1996 VVC btw. I have noticed a low rattling noise coming from the driver’s side exhaust when I start the car, or when I am driving. I don't believe its anything serious, although I thought I would check. I think that it might be just slightly knocking the bumper, or the bracket is loss. Anybody had the same problem? Do you think it might be the bracket? Thanks |

If the exhaust is original, then on a 1996 there is likely to be some corrosion (the standard system is only galvanised). It could be a number of things, none of which are too serious, but in no particular order here are my thoughts: 1) Corroded rear silencer pipework, may even be slightly holed. 2) Break down of internal sound deadening material inside the silencer. 3) Driver's side hanging bracket bush worn, causing movement in the bracket. 4) Exhaust strap rusted through / damaged (this is IMO quite likely) 5) Catalyst damage / worn out. 6) Heat shield material 'rattling' on top of the silencer. May also be a damaged flexi-pipe (as this is very common), but your description of where the noise is coming from would suggest otherwise. Flexi pipe is central under the car, under the sump.
