MG MGF Technical - K&N Improve Fuel Consumption?

Ok, I've been lurking on these boards for the last week. From what i gather, Installment of a K&N 57i kit will result in an increase of 8 BHP on a MPI and 15 BHP on a VVC. How does this affect the consumption of fuel?
James Foley

The increased bhp has little efffect on mpg, it seems. Some get less, usually due to keeping the revs up 'cos they like the noise, others (inc. myself) have noticed better mpg - up to 30 miles on a full tank. I never dared go over 400 miles on one tank before, and can do so regularly since.

All of this is basically because engine breathing is helped by the filter.

As a newcomer, please tell me
1. What in involved in fitting a K&N?
2. What does it cost
3. Supposed benefits?
4. Why aren't they fitted as standard if they're so damn good?

I have noticed a slight improvement on fuel consumption after the K&N, but only about 30 miles to the tank. which I suppose is about 10% for me.
Never get close to 400 though.

1. very easy to fit, and lots of info in archives.
2. about £80
3. extra bhp, more noise, feels more responsive.
4. like so many things, windstops, bridgestones, etc.

It took a while for me to get a K&N fitted but I can't imagine not having one now.

I have a 2000VVC and the one thing which really disappointed me was the throttle response. It always felt at best unresponsive. I could floor the throttle and nothing would happen until the revvs shot past 3000rpm. I liken it to a old turbo, nothing would happen and then you'd get a sudden surge of power.

This really did changed with the K&N, the response is much much sharper. I can tap the throttle and the car surges forward in any gear.

This is on top of more BHP which you can really notice on the motorway. Get one.

Gov't noise restrictions. Same for exhaust.

And I have to admit being one of these. My fuel consumption seems to have gone up, but with the enjoyment the K&N brings - who cares?

This may amaze you all butI only did over 400 miles on a tank and that was when I was running the car in, now it is more like 32o miles at the most

Paul - if you really want your VVC to go, even with the K&N, keep the revs around 4K or more. The turbo-type kick you're feeling is the VVC mechanism: the mapping of it is a bit crude IMO - on mine you don't feel it until closer to 4K than 3.
