MG MGF Technical - K&N filterrrrrrrrrr wooooowwwwwww

I spent my Saturday afternoon fitting my K&N filter and don't regret it !
Fitting was quite easy. The more difficult was removing all the existing stuff (never thought the air filter box was so large!)

Then, I started the engine. Well, it sounds just like usual (little bit disapointed ;-)
I drove a couple of minutes to let the engine warm up (only smooth accelerations up to 3/4000rpm: no difference in sound apart from a nice sucking sound and a more responsive accelerator pedal)
But then, as the engine reached its normal temperature, I stepped on the pedal and ... wow what have I made to my engine! What a roar!
A few kilometers on the motorway showed me that as far as you don't accelerate strongly the noise is almost the same as with the standard filter.

I must admit there a slight difference in performance, the acceleration comes sooner (more responsive) even if it's only a couple of bhp more and you feel that the engine really breathes and the sound is amazing!

I'm just wondering how it sounds from outside (I don't want it to be "too much" and have a 120hp car sounding like a Porsche GT2!!!!)

Many thanks to all of you who
1) convinced me to go ahead and purchase the thing (Matt & almost everyone here!)
2) helped me with the fitting instructions (Rob's Technical page & Dieter)

PS: I'm not sure my girlfriend will like it ... but I definitely do !

All you have to do now to be a fully fledged member of the MGF Nutters club is join our next Treffen.

Great sound aint it:-)

Your girlfriend will love it. they all do

I haven't heard it from the outside, but at the last track day i was on somepeople made some comments that it sounded good from the pit wall.

They were suprised it was just a filter and standard apart from that.

My favourite comment though (not connected to the noise) is, oh so its just a standard VVC then.

nope its only an MPi. makes me smile.
Matt

Jerome, I just did exactly the same thing to my VVC on the weekend - took me about an hour and a half in the evening. I took my girlfriend for a drive in the morning after somehow resisting the urge to test-drive it in the evening. As soon as I brought the revs over 4/5000, I just began to grin, all the way to 7000. Not only was the acceleration more violent (it really seemed to be that the wheels were coping with more power, scabbling for grip), but it was accompanied by that wonderful race-car sound. I'm sure your girlfriend will love it because my girlfriend did, and she is usually the first to shut me up when I talk about cars. The only problem now is the extra fuel consumption from roaring around every opportiunity I get - such simple pleasures! I would love to do a track day with it, or just race around an airfield for an hour or two just to get that sound and acceleration whenever I want. The best £90 I've spent in a long time!

I've had mine since Aug '98 ... just gave the cone a clean and re-oil yesterday so should last another year. I'll bin the cone then as it would have done about 50K miles. Cheap and effective upgrade.

Gaz

Ted, no thanks, I would be afraid of driving along with you "nutters"with a K&N filter as single modification!

Jérôme

Jérôme, you should get an extra 8BHP out of the K&N providing you ar using a cold air induction kit.

You can hardly hear the K&N from outside the car. It is so loud in the car because it is right behind your ears.
Tony Smith

>>You can hardly hear the K&N from outside the car<<

Well, in a tunnel, that's a different story ...
And with an SP exhaust, you can simply save some weight and remove the horns : they're not useful anymore :oP)
Fabrice

Gaz, why get rid of the cone, i thought if you keep cleaning it it won't need replacing?
Matt

Mine says it has a 1 million mile guarantee - not bad! But you have to clean it every 40/50,000 miles of course.
Andrew Hay

Where can I get a K&N filter then chaps? sounds like a sensible addition.
Andrew

I got mine at Swain & Jones in Farnham 01252 716201. I drove back from Switzerland at Christmas to have the kit put in. FAN F*****G TASTIC!
Paul

I got mine direct from K&N on the web. Just go to their homepage (sorry, can't remember web address), or get it from Brown and Gammon (they advertise on this site). It's well worth it ;)

Just got my cleaning kit off them for my K&N. Thought it was about time!!

I've just ordered mine from J.Cooper (Mini Dealers) in Ferring, (01903) 504455 £83.97+vat & P&P. That was on Tues and they assure me I'll have it for the W/E.

Formula One in Brighton can also get it but quoted 3 weeks!

If your anything like me - want it, want it NOW!
Dean

£83.97+vat & P&P. That was on Tues and they assure me I'll have it for the W/E.

Bit expensive isnt it??

Price Checker

Sounds exactly right for the induction kit
Andrew Hay

I only paid 75.57 plus VAT and post a total of £93.79 and I got it in 2 days.

83.97+vat & P&P. That was on Tues and they assure me I'll have it for the W/E.

This would be £98.66 PLUS whatever they charge for post!

Sorry just have to prove a point!!
Price Checker

You are right - I paid what you paid (about 93 quid all in), but if you got it from K&N they did a 10% discount (I believe), which if you don't take off, you would be talking the same 83 quid before VAT that Dean is paying. I therefore conclude that Dean should buy his from K&N for the best price ;)
Andrew 'devils advocate' Hay

There is one important factor as yet unmentioned - The P&P is to Ferring, I then collect, It is not dilivered to my house - Thus my wife remains blissfully unaware of "more B****y money being spent on that car (You spend more time with that car than you do with me e.t.c e.t.c) "noise what noise? it's always sounded like this! (now that's worth 10%!)
Dean

Ahhhh, wheres Ferring? Im in Northern Ireland and the post was still only a fiver. Still cheaper I do believe
Post Checker

I've got that record too Dean:-)

Ted
Ted Newman

Ted,

Is it with your 'Always Look on the Bright Side [even when standing in a puddle of coolant]' record?

Herod.
Herod

Herod

I didn't get time to stand in the puddle of coolant before the 'brick built sh*t house' of a bloke came and spread sand all over it.:-)

Ted
Ted Newman

Dean, Ted,

i'm afraid I'll have the same after this week-end (back to Normandy for the week-end, my girlfriend will discover THE difference)

Jérôme

What they don't like is the fact that we buy our cars presents, and we don't do the same for them! - well I don't spend £100 without a care on my girlfriend, but I have Scotish blood! However, if the car needs a £100 for a filter, or a sparkly whatever, I think she gets it more often than not ;)
