MG MGF Technical - K&N - best setup

I recently removed my K&N air filter for a short period and have now re-installed it. Although the (small) performance increase is back the noise seems less intense than I remember.

Is this just me getting used to the sound or does the precise location of the air hoses have a noticable impact?

Also, I note some manufactureres (Moss) offer a hose which takes air from one of the unused side air vents into the engine. Would the introduction of a third air hose such as this make any difference to the K&N sound / performance.

If so I will fit as many hoses a possible! ;0)

Apparently, the actual influx of air through the side vents isn't much. When I fit mine, I'm considering looking at taking them up to the grill at the front of the car, that way the air is rammed through the pipes & into the bay.

But I haven't looked into doing this and suspect that it can't be done without drilling two whop-off holes in the car to get the pipes from the engine bay to the front grills. I'm going to have a look next weekend.

My pipes have been kindly rearranged by the garage so at the moment they might aswell not be there. There is a noticable reduction in performance, which follows what has been said about no induction pipes = no power gain. Well its true, hot air is evil. But ayway, the noise is unaffected

Cold air (ie pipe location) makes a difference to power. It does not make any difference at all to the noise level. The higher noise level is due to scrapping the air box and by-passing the air resonance box which acts as silencer on the standard filter setup.

I see, so as far as the sound goes - it is me.

If you want to increase performance you need to ensure the air going into your induction pipes is a cold ( and therefore dense) as possible. Why not take a leaf out of the Nissan Skyline's book and install tiny sprinklers at the end of your induction pipes. This will cool the air leading to increased performance.

Either that or drive in the rain ;?

Isn't the Skyline water injection - Fine mist sprayed directly into the combustion chamber to make the air denser, therefore enabling to fit more air in...Producing more power?

Just the way I understood it.

Intercooler is for turbo / supercharging, suppose it could work if mounted correctly (sort of)....what about a charge cooler?? Going back to old RS Turbo days now....

Hell, as a thought, install a small Air conditioning unit & turn it to the max & then pipe the output into the induction pipes :) - there you go, instant cold air.

I like Steves idea - should give you a 5 BHP gain and the air con only takes 8 bhp so you get a.....lemon!

Why not pour a bucket of ice down the intake? Not only do you reduce intake temps, but as the ice melts you'll get a water spray too...

Didn't MG try this trick with the 1.4 litre turbocharged F that got to 217 MPH ?
At least they were running in the USA where you can be sure there's a ready supply of ice !

....just to put it all right, seems to be a very constructive discussion so far:
my proposal is to carry instead of the obsolete spare tire a bottle with liquid oxigen, connecte to the throttle body or the intake manifold plenum chamber with an insulated pipe and operated by a magnetic valve (by toggle switch on the dash). Liquid oxygen has the big advantage of being really cold and the stuff to burn petrol. Since natural air has only a 21% share of oxygen, you can imagine the effect.............;)))

Thanks everyone for your comments. I started this thread wondering if an extra induction pipe to the K&N would increase power... I now have so many more options ;).

By the way can anyone answer the original question - is there any point adding another induction pipe of will the effect not be worth the effort?

Jonners, I wouldn't bother adding the Moss kit for the benefit of a 57i filter- it is designed specifically for use with the standard air box. The standard airbox intake system is sealed, and therefore can *suck* air in through that vent. Natural airflow through the vent is neglible, with as much air apparently being sucked out as it is being drawn in- got some good video footage of this occuring that I hope that Andy still has on tape?

If you are going to fit another tube for 57i filter cooling, route it in the same way as the existing cooling ducts.
