MG MGF Technical - Insuring a modified MGF

I have just fitted a K&H splitter to my mk1 F (and am very pleased with it) and so wrote to Eagle Star Direct to let then know. At the same time I asked them if it would change my premium if I fitted a K+N 57i filter as recommended on this BBS. They have no problem with the splitter, but want a wopping £106 extra per year if the K+N is fitted. Is this normal? If so, does anyone know an insurance company with a more liberal attitude towards this modification?
Andy

You will find a high proprtion of insurers will turn you away with nothing more than the K&N unfortunately. Crazy but it's true sadly. At a guess I'd say you'll probably find a good 50% will turn you down on the basis of a K&N alone. :(

Opps don't know what happened there, anyway Andy I've just booked my car in to have lowering knuckles and a K&N fitted. My present insurer didn't have a clue what I was on about and wanted an engineers report on how this would affect my car. I rang up Peter Best insureance (01621 840400)they knew what a K&N was and said none of the modifications made any difference to policy premiums - actually their quote was cheaper than it is now with no mods!
My insurance is due in the next couple of weeks so if anyone has any comments on Peter Bests service please let me know. Sue.

Footman James are charging me an extra 100 quid a year since I fitted K&N and an MS Exhaust.

I was lazy last year and just renewed it, but I'll be shopping around next time!

My VVC is quite modified, including SP exhaust, K&N, Splitter, Spolier etc....(see website). My ins co AXA, formally Guardian makes no charge for any of my mods. The only thing they won't allow is suspenion modifications. Pretty good really...

DaveB,

Just out of curiousity, what do they call a "suspension modification"? Lowering Knuckles? Compliance washers? Uprated Poly Bushes?Different Shocks? Different wheel alignment?

The last could probably have a much bigger detremental effect when inappropriately done than most of the other "upratings", I suspect. Indeed, if wrongly set you rapidly end up with tyres without grip - and that IS hazardous!

There is another problem with regards to insurance companies and mods. Thing is, while you are with a company and you modifiy the car, some caompanies will continue to do business with you. However, the same company may still turn away the custom of someone making enquiries for insurance even if the details (mods) are the same. :(

Thanks for the advice. Will try AXA and Peter Best before I fit the K&N.
