MG MGF Technical - Help! Can some one convert a video image into a gif/jpg?

Hi there

I wonder if someone could help- I have a video tape based short 'movie' that I'd like to convert into an animated gif...

It is of an experiment that Tom, Paul, Andy and I performed over the weekend looking at air flow around the side engine air intakes...

Here's what we did:
Driving at 50 mph on a private road, we videoed the air movement around the vent by recording the movement of paper streamers we had stuck in and around the vent before the run.

Conclusion? Very very little, if any, air flow into the duct (and this was with the grille removed!). In fact, from time to time, the streamers inside the vent would project outward, suggesting a negative pressure area, drawing air OUT of the engine bay as opposed to in.

The practical conclusion one can draw from this is that this is a far from ideal location from which to site an air filter intake.

I'd like to transfer the video images to a digital format, and create an animated gif for all to see.

If anyone has got a video card and is willing to transfer the images into a gif or jpg format, I'd be very grateful!

Cheers

Rob,

Why transfer to animated gif? this will produce a big, low quality file. your best bet is to make an mpeg.

as you mentioned, you need to hook up your video-camera or vcr to a graphics card that can take a video input and store as an mpeg.

Perhaps an MPEG would be more appropriate (certainly for the reasons you suggest Steven)- the reasons for a gif is for the convenience of having the animation embedded into a text document on the web page.

An MPG would have to be downloaded & viewed seperately from the page, unless I am mistaken? (I am no IT expert!)

Rob,

you can embed an mpg just like a gif. best though to just put a jpg and description of the mpg and its size, and then just provide a link for people to use to d/l it.

Certainly an option to consider- thanks Steven.

I don't suppose you have a video card then? ;o)

Rob,

Used to on old PC but no longer :-)
Sorry, if I still had it I would be glad to help.

Steven

p.s. if all else fails you *could* buy one. they range from 70ish up.
Steven

Rob,

Bring the Video to the next F meeting, or alternatively if you want it sooner than send it to me.

I have another hobby, (apart from the F) - video editing - with a complete VHS/DV editing computer all set up to do just what you want!

Nice one Daren!

Andy's got the vid, so I'll get him to bring it along!

Remember not all ISPs will support all videao formats. I'm not sure about imbedding an MPEG, I have never been able to get it to display within a document using normal HTML, only by calling the application to display it. If you have something like macromedia all of this is much easier but at a price, a very large price IMO.

I have all the Video gear and software you need on my PC to knock up an animated GIF or MPEG, pitty I live in Holland :-)

Thanks for the offer all the same Tony! :o)

Don't panic Rob, you don't need to go to Holland.
I've got all the necesairy things,
I can do it, if you come over.... ;-)
