MG MGF Technical - Fiddling my F

Still at the "getting to know you" stage with Kyp (my N-reg 1996 1.8i) since it spent 5 weeks with me then 3 being repaired for HGF. So this weekend, I poked around a bit, tightened the dipstick retaining holder's bolt, pushed the drivers side warm-air hose back into its socket and discovered that my bonnet light was not working. All of which leads to a few fiddling questions:

1) There are two sets of wires that I also catch when braking (must that brake-pedal lowering arm) and I thought about taping them out of the way, but does the metal housing behind the centre console get hot?
2) Should there be a rubber boot or similar around the steering column where it goes through the floor? There is some white plastic coming up around it, but the exposed joint looks naked.
3) Does the Workshop Manual, that is often mentioned here, deal with this sort of fiddling - either by pictures or otherwise? Is it a good buy and if so which edition?

TIA
Chaz

Hi Chaz,

1) can't get what you mean, but the metal housing may be the SRS ECU, just behind the gear stick assy.

2) no, plain mechanic http://www.mgfcar.de/epas/connection_2433.jpg

3) yes go for it P/N RCL00051ENG Edition 3 is enough. But don't hope on best pictures.

Beaten to it by Dieter! ;o))

>>1) There are two sets of wires that I also catch when braking (must that brake-pedal lowering arm) and I thought about taping them out of the way, but does the metal housing behind the centre console get hot?<<

That'll be the cables to the heater controls. Best get it up an out of the way, as you say Chaz. Nope, that bit of metal doesn't get that hot.

>>2) Should there be a rubber boot or similar around the steering column where it goes through the floor? There is some white plastic coming up around it, but the exposed joint looks naked.<<

No rubber boot there- as can be seen on Dieter's web link.

The workshop manual is, IMO, much much better than any Haynes manual- well worth the investment.

Gentlemen, thank you. A copy of the workshop manual is on its way and I hope that helps me stop pestering you guys. However,......the wires can't be held up, more sideways and the metal housing looks like the heater/fan housing from a long perusal of Dieter's site. I'll see whether it get swarm to touch first and then try to find a different point to attach the sires to or a hole from which to suspend a cable tidy.

Secondly, doesn't that steering column joint look exposed to you? Does it need oiling? Could it get kicked? Hmm.....may be I need to fiddle some more with an old gaiter and some rubber sealant.

No worries about honest questions to the BBS (IMO)
If you get the book and got any experiance or other questions then please do the same as we try.

Get back and write :)

>steering column joint look exposed to you? Does it need oiling? Could it get kicked?
;)
depends on how fast you use to turn the steering wheel ... LOL

The steering column gaiter mod would be one more silly mods to the car.
BTW, did you already see this:
