MG MGF Technical - FAO Rob Bell :- K&N Help

Rob........Im awaiting the imminent delivery of a K&N. I was reading your fiting instructions on your web page but not being one of the worlds most tech folk I have a few queries. Please note I havent even removed the engine cover yet so bear with me. Removing the old air box seems ok and I know I need to run a ducting tube from under the car up to the Cone....BUT.......hers where it gets tricky.... You say to remove the air pipe from the resonance box. Does the second ducting tube route from under the car to the resonance box or from under the car bypassing the resonance box straight to the cone as with the first duct ???
D Jamieson

Hi there, no problem, I think I can help out here...

>>You say to remove the air pipe from the resonance box.<<

This is the 'elbow' joint? Yes, remove it so that the cooling ducts can be threaded down inside the engine bay, and out under the car.

>>Does the second ducting tube route from under the car to the resonance box or from under the car bypassing the resonance box straight to the cone as with the first duct ??? <<

No, the resonance box is now completely redundant. Both ducts direct air from under the car and project their air onto the filter. The two are paired all the way.

Hope that helps, and let us know how you get on!

(Which reminds me, I must get around to taking some pictures of the installation, as this was all done in the days before I got my digital camera!)

Cheers Rob...... I gather from this the resonance box is a waste of space and was only aiding in obstructing routing of 2 ducting pipes. Seems straight forward now. I hope Im busy fitting later today. Is the job possible without removing the engine cover at all ??
D Jamieson

No probs - yeah, the resonance box is a waste of space, your right -certainly in the context of the K&N kit. :o)

Unfortunately, the inspection cover HAS to be removed. There is no way that the old airbox can be removed with it still in place.

Good luck with the installation - and let me know how you get on :o)

Yes, Rob is right. However you can remove and install the K&N without removing the cover. For cleaning purposes for example.

Cheers and happy roar, Valter

And watch for those sharp pieces of steel around the engine inspection bay!

Rob's instructions are great for fitting the K&N, but not the only ones which exist. There are others on the MGF FAQ at

http://homepage.ntlword.com/dotcomoff

which will give a slightly different view and some other pictures (especially of engine access) which might help. It really is an easy job suitable even for a novice, so go for it

Thanks David.... unfortunately the link doesnt work. Im at work and accessing through a firewall type thingy which might explain it. I will try and have a look later when i get home. Maybe even by then the K&N will be fitted .
D Jamieson

try this link http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dotcomoff/

it will work the other has an 'l' missing

Did anyboby remove the resonnance box, and how ??
I did, but won't say how, since it's no more in one piece ! ;o))
Maybe the damper has to be removed ?
