MG MGF Technical - Exhaust reviews in MGWorld

Hi all - I remember someone (Rob Bell?) talking about a review in MG World of most of the 3rd party exhausts for the F, can anyone point to which issue it was in as I would like to check it out? (My sub started a few copies too late). I want the article rather than the techie graphs on Rob's site as I want to find out what the exhausts look like as much as anything else :o) It's gotta *look* right, you know...

Thanks,
Andrew Duguid

All the systems were photographed, but not on the cars unfortunately :o(

I hope to get some pictures together- and I reckon Silverstone is going to be the place to do it- what with so many 'Fs in one place. :o)

What sort of look were you after Andrew?

Rob - I was going towards the MS Daytona, sharp tailpipes and sound. But there's a lot of praise being said about the SP which also looks good. I want a deep bass rasp but not to be deafened. So any advice or suggestions about what model might be the right one....?

Regards,
Andrew.

Yup- that is what I meant Dave! :o)

I'll hopefully be there ALL weekend this year. Missed most things by only going on the Sunday because of the sprint- still had a fantastic time though!

BBS campsite this year?
Rob Bell

Andrew, I reckon that the two to concentrate on for the noise quality you are after are the Mike Satur and the Janspeed.

The SP (Miltech) Supersport spounds fab, but has a higher pitch 'yowl' to it. Dirk had some sound clips on his web site- are they still there?

Rob

Hi Rob - There's a BRG F around here with the Janspeed, sounds cool but I must admit I'm not too keen on the looks of the pipes...but when that guy pulled away from the lights it made me grin on his behalf :o)

So what you are saying Rob (and SF since i think you've owned both the MS and the SP!) is that the SP is louder than the MS and Janspeed?

Well if that's the case then that's settled!

Where do i get a SP since it's not on the BG website?
Matt

Safe to say it wasn't you I see once in a while around here, then!! But there does seem to be a buch of F'ers around here - I saw four on the 10 minute journey home from work last night....
Andrew Duguid

But remember that MS will make his system to order- and as loud as you like. Miltech also make their system to various 'sound' specs too. I *think* the system they sell to B&G is the louder one- but 'phone 'em up and find out!

Who else sells them? Try Moss International: http://www.mossint.co.uk/

Do check/compare prices with B&G though.

Hehe, I'd better tell you about the F'ers Gallery, MG Dealer Guide and new MGF FAQ I run on my site then....

F'ers Gallery - A Rogues gallery of MGF owners and their cars, ie. pictures of both owners and their cars plus some details about both. Idea being it makes it easier for F'ers using this BBS to recognise each other at the various MG events.

MG Dealer Guide - Just that a guide to good (and not so good) MGF Dealerships in the UK.

MGF FAQ - A lot of (eventually!) articles about various aspects surrounding the ownership of the MGF (Created by myself, Rob Bell and Andy (Scarlet Fever) Phillips):

General FAQ - A wealth of useful information regarding various aspects of owning an MGF.

Common Problems - Information concerning known mechanical problems and common technical queries.

MGF DIY - A collection of step-by-step Do-It-Yourself guides on how to remove, repair or replace various parts of the MGF.

Useful contacts -Contact details for reputable companies, clubs, organisations and personal websites relating to the MGF.

Which of Mike Satur's systems did you have fitted ?
Can you explain how it sounds from within the car?.
I'm looking around at the moment but dont want one that sounds too loud, just a pleasant 'sports car ' note.

Scarlet has currently...

MS Daytona (loud spec) & cat bypass

But has had...

SP Supersport

From a sound point of view, the three "benchmark" systems are the above two and the Trevor Taylor Fxtreme.

The Trevor Taylor has the deepest note, a really lovely rumble, but is very loud and can be annoying on long journeys. Looks completely pants IMO (worse than the standard system), but, externally anyway, is the coolest sounding system.

The Mike Satur Daytona has exchangable tail pipes including a quad pipe option. Nice deep note on tickover, not over loud at normal rpms so is very easy to live with on long journeys. Hit 4500rpm however and it increases in volume and becomes more high pitched - way cool!! Also, with the quad finishers fitted, in towns there are some excellent "stereo" effects. Looks by far the best as although the quad pipe option is a little OTT for some, there are some very attractive twin pipe options also available. System is fully adjustable in height, rotation and depth, allowing a perfect tailpipe alignment in the rear bumper (a unique feature!)

Miltek manufacture the SuperSport system which has 3" daytona style up-swept tailpipe finishers and makes lots of "pops & crackles" when the engine is sold. Superb on a winter morning!! Like the Daytona, is quiet when you want it to be and loud (very loud sans-cat!) when you are booting it! Has a distinctive F1 like "wail", very high pitched and raspy for an exhaust. After 2 years of this wailing i grew very tird of it and started looking for something else. There are different specs of exhaust available from Miltek, the SP spec is the loudest and usually has the SP logo etched onto the tailpipe finishers or under the rear silencer box. However, SP are now defunct so newer versions may not have the logo's. There is some evidence that the SP gets louder with age, whether this is down to the internal baffles braking down has yet to be proven. Lastly, another common SP feature is poor bumper alignment. This is due to the system only being adjustable in height at one end, causing one pipe to appear higher than the other. Tricky to fit as well due to large bore finishers.

Hi Tom
I have the Daytona Quad system, Scarlet Fever has it just about right. I love it already.Ihave been for two pointless drives through the village in the last hour just to savour the sound. 356 GBP very well spent
anita

also got, ms daytona, bypass and K&N.

Sounds great, and with finishers for all tastes got to be the one.

Matt, Eastbourne

if loudness is all you're after, try breaking the exhaust just after the flexi-pipe. Mine was broken for a few days, people could hear me coming from a couple of miles away.
paul w

LOL Paul! I take that into consideration if all else fails.
Matt

I have just bought and fixed my Milltek exhaust. Super sound. PLEASE has anyone got something like a Eu or Europe certificat to send me. I want to make it legal.

THANK YOU

ROFL... forget it.

Anita,
I am very interested in the MS Daytona Quad system. Where did you have it fitted? Also do you have a cat bypass ? Was the total cost 356GBP ?

Many thanks

Frank

Hello Frank,
Yes,£356 was the total cost delivered within 48 hours and included free stainless catalyst nuts.
Fitted in one hour by a friend.
I have just come in after a drive without the roof, the sound just gets better.
anita

Forgot to mention Frank, no cat bypass yet. I don't know the pro's and con's.

Andrew,

I think that me have been my BRG you saw, I travel to Gatwick everyday from Merstham. But don't have a Janspeed, its a Phoneix, it sounds even better now that I have added the K&N.

Mark,

I considered the Phoenix system at silverstone last year - how do you find it. Only if I do ever get a new exhaust, I would not want it to be too intrusive in a longer journey. From what other people have said about the Phoenix it is just that, but an unbiased opinion is always helpful? Basically, I would be after something that has a nice sound without been too loud - does the Phoenix fit this description in your opinion?
Paul Lathwell

As an aside, the Pheonix exhaust system was not included in the original exhaust tests. It is relevant to note that they claim a massive 15 bhp improvement over standard, a very similar claim to the (now defunt) SP Performance. We proved the SP to only produce 4.3 bhp over standard in our tests, this make me EXTREMELY sceptical. I have no doubt that it is a good system, it certainly sounds nice, reminicent of the original Motobuild system - complete with annoying resonances on long journeys. It is well made, and has unique MGF fuel filler cap look alike tailpipe finishers (IMO OTT, and thats coming from someone with MS's quad finishers!!) It's just their marketing strategy that i am a little dubious of.

Incedentally, we have also tested cat bypass tubes and proved them to only be worth between -2 & +2 bhp (VVC vs MPi). Their power graph shows +6 bhp for the Pheonix and cat bypass option over the Pheonix and catalyst on a VVC F. This also contradicts our independant tests.

Maybe we should arrange an "Exhaust-o-rama" sequel? What do you reckon guys?

SF
Scarlet Fever

Andy,

I'm not too bothered about the increase in power from the system, my main objective would be to find a system with a nice sound without too much intrusion, in this respect I've been told before that the Phoenix system is better than most with a lack of drone at motor-way cruising speeds. As for the filler cap finishers I would not go for these but would go for the much more traditional straight twin tail-pipes from recollection these were very similar to those found on the Trophy. :)
Paul Lathwell

Paul,

Well, from what i have seen and heard of it, it is a very nice piece of kit. Well made, thought out and reasonably priced too.

Hmmm, the more i think about it, the more i feel we need to all get together again...

Wish list of exhausts to test.

MS Daytona (as a control)

Sebring the same, to expensive.
New from last year are Philip Class = BN-Pipes (quad pipe)
Moto-Concept got very silent in MGF terms.

To suggest only some.

PS. looking for a second hand Miltec :)
Dieter Koennecke

Paul,

One of the reason I went for the phoniex system was that it sounded great without the need for ear defenders when driving along. My system has a cat bypass and a K&N. I have the fuel filler cap ends on my car, but thats mainly because thats what they wanted to show off on their stand at Silverstone (I got a cracking deal on the whole system because I suggested that they may want to borrow my car on the Sunday so that people could hear what it sounded like, fiting and all the bits for £275).
Like you I wasnt that interested about the additional power (even thought I have noticed an improvement)I want something that made the car sound more like a sports car and less like a metro when I pulled away at the lights.

SF.
Would be happy to offer my car if another test day was arranged.

Depending on when you do this (A holiday in Miami beckons!) I still have the standard exaust on my car. If you need to use it then it's yours Andy.

SF,

Happy to come along with a Phoenix coupled to an ITG filter for a comparison.

The Pheonix, according to their figures, has near parity with the MSD- so I reckon 5 bhp increase from this system is realistic.

As for sound, Dave's car sounds excellent- rather like a TT, but a good deal more refined. Still not sure myself about the allen-key tail pipe finishers, but looks nice 'n' chunky. A nice plain-finished version would suit me sir :o)

Another RR session? Game-on!

I thought Dave's Phoenix system was very nice sounding and surprising quiet really (think I may be too used to the K&N roar TBH). From memory (Silverstone last year) the system is very nicely finished off and looks well made. I'm with Rob on the exhaust finishers and would go for the straight option, though the hex design is very distinctive and does look different. Hmmm, could even be temtped by these for this reason alone! :)
Paul Lathwell

Hmmm... whilst I still have the standard pipes on my VVC, I think I could (dates depending of course), organise a decent microphone and stuff to record the noises, then I'm sure between us we'd find somewhere for the MP3's to reside... interested guys?
