MG MGF Technical - EPAS Problem
Hi Chaps, Got in the car yesterday evening and my EPAS light stayed on and the EPAS is not functioning. It has recently come back from having the Head gasket replaced ... seems like one thing after another .. you would never believe that it is only a 2001 mgf! Does anyone know what could have caused the failure? Any help is as always greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chris |

Chris, you haven't mentioned it, so I presume that the speedo is still working? You might want to quickly check the EPAS fuses... |

But most lightly the coupler in the stearing coloum is on the way out, the testbook should pick this up. |

... or a bad connection on the EPAS ECU. Should be easy to find/rectify Chris. |

Happened to me two weeks ago. AA explained that when you rev the engine whilst the car is stationary for more than 30 seconds or so (which I was doing to estaablish whether the fan was working correctly) then the EPAS deactivates as the ECU assumes that there is a fault (i.e. 3000 rpm but no speedo reading). See BBS from last monday, its a safety mechanism which is fixed if you disconnect and reconnect the fuse to the EPAS. Can't remeber who informed me of this lasst week but they provided a much more comprehensive explanation, like i said have a look at last weeks BBS 'EPAS deactivation'. |

p.s. where are the epas fuses.. I couldnt see them in the fuse box under the steering wheel where the others are.. but then i might just be blind as a bat.. :-) Chris |

Chris, It is a 40 amp fuse in a small plastic fuse box under the bonnet marked "70amps". Good luck! Sam |

Chris The EPAS fuse is under the front bonnet on the left side of the car about half way back. A flat rectangular cover in translucent plastic. Should have a 40 amp fuse in it. Lid probably says max 70 amp. |

Pull the fuse out and totally visible. It is a standard car spade type fuse. |

Don't count them yet Chris - so far we've only told you where the fuse is, not necessarily what the problem is although hopefully David Wood may have put his finger on it. |

Also one of the passanger compartment fuses (fuse 1?) is used, but other things should have stopped working if so. |

If your EPAS has disconnected as the car was revved high for over 30 secs(?) then you do not need to disconnect the fuse and replace to reset EPAS. Just driving the car at a speed such that the speedo begins to register should cause EPAS to re-engage (well it does on my F!) Jason H |

I've sorted it... am well pleased... I did what Jason suggested and removed and re-inserted that big 40A fuse and started it and lo-and-behold .. ive got power steering back and the light has gone off .. woohoo! No doubt MGR would have charged me a few quid to do that .. :-)) Thanks everyone for all the help.. Chris |
