MG MGF Technical - Engine running rough
I have a '97' MGF VVC, head gasket replaced in Jan, starter motor replaced in Feb. I have noticed just recently especially this morn, that may car has been running a little rough, especially this morn when it took 10 mins to start. Over the past few days it seems to run rough by juddering a lot as i change gears, i spose the simplest way of putting it, is as thouhgh its got kangaroo juice in it.....When I got to my destination today, I looked at the engine and noticed the pipe to the air filter box (note, I am by no means an expert in this area) had come loose, could this be the prob???? Anyone with any ideas would greatly be appreciated.... Andy |

Hi Andy, Sounds like it needs a service, particularly check ignition system, plugs & leads etc. I also always change oil more regularly than the stated 12K interval and use the best parts I can get my hands on (platinum plugs etc). It will pay off in the long run. Keep an eye on the temp gauge & water levels also, rough running can precede an HGF. Cheers, Russ. |

Another thought is an inlet manifold leak. How is the car idling? What makes the problem worse? Any untoward noises? A classic problem with the VVC is the cam bolt working its way loose - might be worth removing the cam belt cover and checking the torque of the retaining bolts... |

My 2000 vvc had a similar problem whwn the map sensor failed. It was particularly bad on cold mornings and gave the 'kangaroo' effect. It was found after a session on Test Book and cost £120 for a new sensor. |
