MG MGF Technical - Drivers side rear vent fan

My F has started making a right racket when it gets hot, which I've worked out as coming from the exhaust fan in the drivers side air intake.

The only trouble is, I can't get to the fan to oil it/ replace it! I've removed the intake mesh and plastic inset, but can't actually get much access to the fan itself. Anyone got any hints and tips on how to get to the thing?

It doesn't seem to have any affect on the cooling, but is quite embarassing when you're sitting at the lights on a nice hot day with the roof down!

Thanks,

Nigel.

Nigel, I suspect that the only way you can access the fan is via the engine bay...

Engine bay access:

1) Remove windstop or fold it down (if you have one),

2) Reach into the parcel shelf area and peel back the rear of the carpet to reveal the 5 overcentre catches that secure the back of the hood - unclip all 5.

3) lift the back of the hood up (it will hinge forwards) and secure in the vertical position with either a piece of string or a bungee cord.

4) Remove the parcel shelf carpet and sound deadening material.

5) Mk1 MGF = Using a 10mm socket undo the 11 retaining bolts in the access panel.
MY2K MGF = Using a 10mm socket and a 10mm ratchet spanner (to get under the speaker box) undo the 11 retaining bolts in the access panel.
MG TF = Using a 10mm socket and a 10mm ratchet spanner (to get under the speaker box) undo the 11 retaining bolts in the access panel and the pair of 10mm bolts that secure the engine bay braces.

6) Lift the access panel out of the car (this is a tight fit on an F, and a VERY tight fit on a MY2K F . TF)

In the best Haynes manual tradition, Re-fitting is the reverse of the above! ;-)

There are a number of websites with photos of this proceedure on it, the MGF FAQ springs to mind, as does the SOS website:

Thanks, guys. I'll take a look at the weekend.

Lost count after the first 5... :-)

Seriously, although i have removed many an inspection cover in my time, i was on a bit of a learning curve on Saturday too - First time i had encountered the MY2K speaker box - and the access problems it causes and the first time i had come accross the TF engine bay brace bolts too, hmmm that reminds me i must give Victoria a ring about some engine bay braces...

Yup, all bolt on - although the central bracket seems to bolt into captive nuts entrapped inside the boot bulkhead, double-skinned panel. But not something that'd be unsurmountable... ;o)
