MG MGB Technical - Windscreen wipers only covering 80% of sweep

Mark I - pull door handle 1964 mgb roadster
The wiper arms only sweep about 75 - 80 % of the area they really ought to. There seems to be a lot of free play too.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

buy a new motor

Hiya Paul,

Just check the nut on the front of the wiper motor - where the cable tube comes out - is done up properly.

Must come down and spend some time in your corner of the MG world and sort that treasure hunt out - and get another curry in Ringwood!

Check that the fasteners are tight on the wheel boxes -- make sure the motor is mounted securely so there is no wiggle, and that all other fasteners are tight.

If you look at the pictures of early MGBs in Clausager you will see that many of them don't lie along the bottom edge when parked but across the glass at an angle. Assuming they don't sweep the bonnet on the other side of the arc the implication is that they have a narrower sweep angle. Very worn wheel boxes can cause this, and slop at each end of the sweep, and sometimes rotating the spindles by 180 degrees and turning the rack over can improve things. But the biggest improvement I found was replacing the rack. Close comparison with the new one showed that the pitch of the spiral part of the rack changed as it went through the wheelboxes, which has an effect on both sweep and slop.
