MG MGB Technical - Wilwood calipers advice

Hi everyone, ive always had wildwood brakes on my GT, ad ive always had a funny brake pedal I.E I press the pedal and it goes quite far, then press again and its firm at the top. If I wait a few seconds then it starts all over again. Could it be that the calipers are too big for the master cylinder and that it takes a bit more fluid transfer to get the stiff pedal? Ive tried all types of bleeding techniques and never got anywhere.
Thanks

Hi,

My thought is that your rear brakes need adjusting. Try the pedal with the hand brake on and see if the movement is less.

What you posted makes a lot of sense. The 4 piston Wildwood calipers have a larger internal area for the brake fluid and therefore will require a larger bore master cylinder to cope with the increased fluid displacement. RAY

Hi,

If you install a larger bore MC, then, yes, there will be less pedal movement, BUT you will need to push harder on the pedal for the same stopping effect.

If the first press is also spongy then that indicates air in the system.

If the Wilwood calipers have a larger bore than the originals then that will result in a longer pedal but more braking effect for a given pedal pressure. A larger bore master, if it restores the ratio, will reverse those, but put it back to the original travel and pressure.
