MG MGB Technical - Weber Carb Installation
Is there any good information on connection a Weber 32/36 to a 74 MGB? I am considering replacing my HIF4s for a weber and was wanting to know how to connect the manual choke, fuel, etc. Thanks, Kent

If you get the carb and manifold from Brittek they give good, understandable written instructions plus are available for (very friendly and helpful) phone assistance. Maybe they might let you see the instructions before you order so that your can decide.

I agree that Brittek is a great place to purchase any parts, however I have to ask why are you considering going to the DGV Weber? If you want something that you can set and then forget, the Weber may be the ticket. However any performance promises that you might be expecting from it will not satisfy you. If your HIF4's are shot, then IMHO you'd be better off getting them properly rebuilt, or purchasing new ones. I tried the Weber on my 74B and was not impressed. The best thing I did was go back to a brand new pair of SU's. I think I still have the installation manual that came with it, so if you'd like I could scan it and send it you. Unfortunately the Weber doesn't even make a good doorstop, but it's one helluva good paperweight...

The Weber is a pretty straightforward bolt on swap. Remove the SU and their manifold. Bolt on the new manifold and the carb. Fuel line connects at the front (like the SU's), Accelerator at the back and the choke to the engine side of the carb. You may have to shim the bolts for the manifold with cut washers as, if I remember, the Pierce intake manifold is slightly thicker than the stock exhaust manifold. If you havent realized it yet you have opened anotherround of the Weber vs SU debate.

Thank for everyone's input. I have been debating of installing the Webers on my 74B for a while now. My HIF4s do work... but barely. The left one works good, but the right one doesn't appear to be pulling in the air it used to. I cleaned (dejunked) the float assembly but have not had much luck. I will try to call Britek for their help. Thanks again... Kent

Kent, you can have your HIF's throttle shaft assemblies rebushed and get new throttle shafts installed for $110. At least that is what Apple Hydraulics charges. http://www.applehydraulics.com/carbs.htm Or you can get both HIF's restored/totally rebuilt by Apple Hydraulic for about $345. Joe Curto Inc. the god-father of SU carbs in the US, also can properly rebuild your HIF's. Give them a call. http://www.geocities.com/jcurtoinc/index.htm The reason I mention the rebuild, is that my own experience with both the Weber DGV and the SU's on my 79'B has proven the Weber to be a so, so solution. Yes the Weber was reliable, but the car was gutless at low rpms. The SU's once restored are just as reliable and the performance difference makes up for any eccentricities in regards to the initial tuning procedure for the SU's. That's my perennial 2 cents worth. Good luck and happy motoring to which ever option you choose to go with.

Kent: a PROPERLY JETTED Weber will perform just as well as SU's and be easier to keep set. BUT, I would not replace SU's with one when the expense is near the cost of a quality SU rebuild. Andrew's recommendations for rebuilders are right on. You would probably wind up fiddling with the Weber jets for awhile to get it right and dual SU's are original on your model B and look racy with K&N filters. Plus you can pick up 5 or 6 HP down the line if you rig a cold air box for the SU's. Can't do that with the downdraft Weber.

Kent- If insist on using the Weber DGV econo-carb then hunt around and buy a Cannon intake manifold. Don't use the Pierce manifold that is normally packaged with it as it will produce a flat spot between 1,500 and 2,500 Rpm where the throttle response is poor. Properly rebuilt, your SU HIF4s will give much better mid-range performance. If you don't want to rebuild the SUs yourself, send them to the Grand Master of SUs in the USA, Joe Curto. They'll come back clean as a whistle and will last for years. Joe Curto has a website at http://www.geocities.com/jcurtoinc
