MG MGB Technical - Vented Valve Covers

For Christmas I thought I would treat my '72B to an alloy valve cover. The car currently has the vented stock type with a hose that just drapes down toward the ground, with no attachment to a carbon canister. The car has run fine for the past 4 years I have owned it. The alloy cover I purchased is vented only through the cap. Has anyone with a later B with an alloy cover with this venting arrangement found it to be adequate? I would rather not have a hose hanging over the side of the engine attached to nothing if a vented cap will allow adequate ventillation.

Joe, The vented cap works ok, I used one of the alloy covers on my 74 with a vented cap and had no problems with it. Clifton

Joe, mine works fine too, but I have a K&N filter clamped to the front tappet cover for venting as well. You'll get a little oil mist on the valve cover to wipe off on occasion, but no big deal.

Joe, Victoria British does offer a vented alloy cover (Moss does not). Some understand more about this than I but I have read that if you switch to a non-vented valve cover you should be careful to match the proper, later side cover vents to your engine or the engine will not breath sufficiently. Regards Steve.

The vented cap on a non-vented cover works fine for its primary purpose which is scavenging the crankcase. But if you have an anti-runon valve disconnecting the pipe between the cover and the canister will disable it. Even without an anti-runon valve over time the canister will clog as it is not being scavenged and you may get problems with fuel starvation if the tank cannot vent properly, or flooding if the carb float chambers cannot vent properly.
