MG MGB Technical - Superlite alloy wheels

I have looked through the archives for SUPERLITE brand wheels, made in Australia, and have not really found any thing. I am looking at a new set 15x6 with a 24 postive offset. Look very similar to Panasport wheels and even have steel tapered lug nut inserts to protect the alloy. I have many websites giving info on the suplite wheels, but would really like to hear first hand experience with this brand on their MGB's. Thanks, Mark.

I found they don't look as good as the Minilite replicas which is why I got my Minilite type from the UK instead of the local Superlites. The Superlites have a bigger middle section so the spoked are shorter and fatter. Other than looks though I am sure they work just the same. Lots of people use them in NZ and I've never heard anything bad about them.

Hi Mark.

I have a couple of sets (MGB and midget) but I have not used them yet.

I'm quite happy with the quality of the finish and their appearance, but really can't comment further than that at this stage.

Cheers

Mark,

I have the superlite alloys on my roadster and my GT. I think they look great and after three years, the 15" alloys on the roadster still look like new.

They attract plenty of attention too!

If you try this link I'm sure you'll be able to find out more information.

Mark.,
I forgot to mention that the 15" wheels have ten "spokes" and you have to use a lower profile tyre and the 14" have eight.

Ah, that's a difference then. My 15 inch Minilite types are 8 spoke.

Thanks Simon, Ian and G.J. Hoyle. Your input helps. It was mentioned that the 15" wheels came with ten spokes, as shown at performancewheels.com.au. However the site I am ordering only offers the ten spoke on a five lug hole rim. All the superlite 15" wheels I am looking at with four lug holes only have 8 spokes, and the centre is much smallar. Look under Superlites at www.packracingproducts.com . If anyone is using these wheels, would love to hear from you! Thanks, Mark

I'm using superlites on my V8. They have polished rims (which was a nice suprise) and look great. These are 15 inch by 6 with 10 spokes and the standard MGB four stud pattern. I use 95 by 60 tyres on them. These fit closely under standard unaltered guards with no rubbing/contact problems at all. I am also using ventilated disks and 4 pot Volvo brake calipers, also with no clearance problems (unlike the rostyles which interfered).
Big improvement in steering/handleing over the rostyles. If you want 8 spokers I believe you need to go to 14 inch.
I got mine through MG Workshops in Melbourne for a little over $200 (Australian) a wheel.
Performance wheels are located in the city of Adelaide in the state of South Australia. They won't sell direct but if you give them a call (go through directory assistance) they will tell you their local distributor.
They come with the "Performance" logo in the centre of the wheel, which is exactly the same size and shape as the black and silver MG badge that goes in the centre of the rostyle wheels. I silicon-glued four of these on and it looks as though they were made that way.

Thanks Peter, The Superlite rims I am looking at are 15"x6" with a 24mm positive offset, as showning at www.packracingproducts.com. They come with 8 spokes in the 4 bolt pattern. Would you know what offset your 10 spoke rims are? Mark.
MG Guier

I'm afraid I didn't ask. Do you know how to read/measure it off the wheel? I'll go look. I do know that off set is critical because clearance is close on both the inside and the outside of the wheel arch at the back. Suggest you give Performance a ring and ask "what offset you sell for MGBS" They must know.
Peter

Apparently it's been printed on the outside rim of the wheel all along on a tiny little plaque.
24 Positive.
As I said, clearance is close on both the outside and to my suprise at the time, inside as well.

I have heard that Datson or Nisson 240Z wheels will bolt on, but they are only 14", but are wide, 5 1/2" I think. Check it out. it is worth a look for some inexpensive high performance wheels.

C.E.,

I'm on the lookout for some new wheels for my '78 B. What difference would the 15" tires be on the speedo versus 14" tires?

In addition to 240Z, I've also heard that some of the SAAB wheels will fit a roadster. Not quite sure about the 24mm offset. I had to special order some 14" because of the offset. I'm not happy with them, so I'm looking for something else, possibly in the 15" variety.

Shook, the wheel size doesn't affect the speedo reading. Only the tyre size. The outside diameter is what matters. So with a 15 inch wheel you just use a lower profile tyre (which is good). Try this site to play with different tyre sizes and see the differences it makes to speedo reading:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

The original size was 165 80 R14

To save time, the nearest commonly available 15" tire available is the 195/60 x 15". 0.7% off, or 0.4mph fast @ 60mph.

Derek Nicholson

Thanks for the Miata web site. Interesting. It will be good to be armed with this information when it comes time for new rubber.
