MG MGB Technical - Sticking clutch pedal

Hi i have a question my clutch pedal seems to stick not all the time i had a look and no fluid in the master cylinder I top this up left lid off and pumped the pedal about ten times replaced lid and seemed ok but then on the second drive pedal again stuck as I was pushing down to change gear hopefully it just needs bleed so my question is how do I go about bleeding the clutch if iam doing this on my own thanks for looking regards Paul car is a 71/72 MGB GT

Stick in what way? Up or down? Regardless of whether there is fluid in the master or not the pedal should always return, and if there was no fluid in the master then you have a leak.

There should be a return spring on both pedals in the cabin under the heater shelf (picture, ignore the arrow) which should fully return the pedals, this is in addition to the springs inside the master cylinders that only push the pedal back so far.

With no fluid in the master and hence no back-pressure from the clutch itself the spring in the master cylinder should push the pedal back even if the pedal spring is missing. If not, then there are others things wrong as well, such as with the master or the pedal pivot.

No fluid is almost certainly going to cause problems but it might also be worth replacing the hose as internal degradation can result in peddle malfunction.

Almost? :o)

PW,
pedal return spring and rubber hose were my first thoughts too.

If you want I can send you details of a one man gravity or push-pedal bleeding system and home made apparatus it's what I do with my car for clutch and brakes, just email me.

I'd also very thoroughly flush through a fair quantity of new fresh clean fluid after fitting the new hose to clean the system rather than just refilling and bleeding.

Personally unless anyone can confirm that the current stock of rubber clutch (and brake) hoses aren't made of modern piss-poor rubbish rubber I'd stay well clear of them and buy the Goodridge type for fit 'n' forget. "High performance stainless steel braided clutch line kit for MG MGB/BGT/125 midget 1962 - 1980. Goodridge clutch hose kits feature the finest quality hose, consisting of a PTFE inner with a stainless steel outerbraid."

Paul, I agree delete 'almost'.
