MG MGB Technical - Steering Rack Adjustment

I've replaced the steering rack on my 72 MGB with a "slightly used" one because I got a good deal on it and it was the only part of my steering I hadnt replaced. My replacement has a bit of play in it. The steering wheel can be moved about 1/8 inch before it encounters any resistance and moves the rack. Is there any adjustment I can make, hopefully with the rack on the car? I have everything all aligned and tow in set so if I have to redo all of that I'll probably put my old rack back on.

William - Try removing some of the shims under the damper cover, starting with the thinest one first. Also make sure that the rack has the proper amount of 90W gear lube in it. Good luck - Dave

William,
Are you sure it's the rack that has the play and not play in the collapsible steering column ?

Or in the UJ?

Yes I get movement of the shaft all the way down to the rack in this 1/8" or so. My rack doesnt have shims under the top plate but has a screw adjustment. I've tightened and loosened this to see the results and find it just makes the shaft harder or easier to turn, no effect on the freeplay. I've had this one off four times now with the intention of putting the old one on but end up making an adjustment here or there and it seems to fix the problem until I put it all back together. Its agravating! I just put new gaiters and ball joints on and have my toe in set "just right"
