MG MGB Technical - Roadster axle on GT

My son is now the proud owner of a 1980 GT. We have a few odd jobs to do to make it roadworthy, including a weeping brake cylinder. We stripped the drum and shoes and removed the old cylinder. The new cylinder does not fit, despite being the correct one. The car has wire wheels and the axle looks relatively new: I can only assume a previous owner has swapped the axle for a roadster one.

My plan is to weld up the pin hole and drill a new one. Is this a reasonable repair or would it be ok to simply add an extra hole?

Mike,
weld up and drill is a reasonable way to go although I don't see any reason not to just drill a new hole provided there is some metal between them. What you need to ensure is the plane of piston travel is maintained. Mark up carefully and all should be well. If you get it wrong the pedal/piston will need to travel a bit further for the same relative brake effort.
Alternatively changing the back plate for the correct one is no big deal (if you have a socket of the right size ..)

I welded the old and drilled a new when I replaced the axle on my roadster. To cut down off-road time I refurbished the backplates on the 'new' axle before starting the swap, which had come off a GT.

Check the bore diameter first. If someone has changed the axle it is not just the pin position that is different . The operating bores are different between roadster and GT. The GT are larger.
